Hi, the tidy feature used to create an xtml compliant document. Since
I upgraded to 1.5.5 it now creates an HTML 4.01 doc. How can I change
this back to XTML?
Thanks,
Dave
So...
I wrote this nice document in Markdown.
Looks exactly the way I want it in the preview window.
Uh...how do I save the generated HTML from within TextMate?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, I thought it would be obvious.
I could run the markdown.pl script from the command line but that
seems unnecessarily convoluted.
Thanks,
S
Hey all,
i thought putting :
TM_RUBY /opt/local/bin/ruby
into :
Preferences > Advanced > Shell Variables
was ok to run a rb file whith this Ruby
but i get allways :
RubyMate r6354 running Ruby r1.8.2 (/usr/bin/ruby)
>>> essai.rb
in the RubyMate Console.
then, the default Apple's Ruby :(
i think the env var name "TM_RUBY" is wrong ?

Hello:)
First I do not understand the changes in this script.
Certain users prefer to work with latex but without pstricks, why not
make two different scripts.
There is a little change in one line :
now
if [ -s "${PDF}" -a ! "$PDF" -ot "$FILE" ]; then
before
if [ -s "${PDF}" -a "$PDF" -nt "$FILE" ]; then .....
-ot instead -nt ? why ?
Greetings Alain Matthes
I am trying to wrap my mind around the RSpec gem, so I've installed
the RSpec bundle. I have a simple spec (see below) that requires the
RSCM gem that I have installed. When I run the spec from the command
line it runs find, but when I run it from within TextMate using the
RSpec bundle I get a load error (No such file to load -- rscm).
Do I need to do something special to access my gems from my spec?

Hello all.
I have been looking at Textmate and bluntly, have been blown away by the
balance it has gotten between a really narrow scope that is done really
really really well.
For example, "wrap each line" bundle command is just majic! I can't think
how many times I have had to do this by hand in Dreamweaver!
But I have a question that I am sure someone else has solved that I have not
found a solution for on the web.
That is, how do you integrate Textmate, with SVN and also manage sites?
Now, before ou just hit reply and say "SVNX" let me explain...
Dreamweaver has a nice feature, that is, it knows about all the files in the
site. if you change the location of a
file, change the name of a directory or the name of the file itself within
the site, it will run back through the entire site and update every link to
that file.
This is especially useful when you are re-coding sites and bringing them up
to the CSS age.
The problem with this, is if you do it, SVN doesn't see it and SVN then
complains about missing file X and added file Y when in fact it is a simpel
rename X to Y - the end result of this is polution orphans in the SVN
database (not a huge problem, unless you are using huge files)
Conversly, if you do the move from SVN (svn rename big_picture.jpg
little_picture.jpg) then Dreamweaver doesn't know about it and can't find
those 101 references to big_picture.jpg that just got moved (of course you
can do it with a find/replace, but this does not handle relative links).
One obvious solution is move it with SVN, then do a find / replace in
textmate.
But that doesn't handle relative links
(../../../img/myimages/little_picture.jpg being the same as
../myimages/little_picture.jpg)
So how do you do it? I think my answer lies in regex.....
Does anyone have a solution out there to this particular problem?
Regards
Mikel
Is there any more in-depth explanation anywhere about what alt-up/
down really does? I understand there's some sort of columnar
behavior, but when I use it in prose text, it seems to behave in a
rather baffling manner to me... I've been looking for an equivalent
to the (IMO very useful) ctrl-up/down functionality in Emacs (next
paragraph, or, rather, next empty line, basically) and thought
perhaps this might work somewhat like that -- and it seems to, if I
move to the beginning of the line first. (OK, so the "next paragraph"
functionality is a question of its own, I guess; is there something
like it?)
And while I'm on the topic of navigation (and things I miss from
Emacs ;-) -- if I accidentally press cmd-up or down, I completely
lose my current location. Any way of "undoing" something like that?
(In Emacs I used alt-x x or something like that, to switch position
with the position before the navigation.) It's not always that I
remember to set a bookmark before this sort of thing -- mainly
because it tends to be accidental :->

Sorry if this is a well-known issue, but I couldn't find anything
about it...
For some reason, completions no longer seem to work in my
installation of TextMate. Whether I press the escape button *or*
select Completion > Next Completion (or Previous Completion) from the
menu, all I gett is the system bell/beep.
Does anyone have any ideas about what could have caused this (have I
pressed some Forbidden Keyboard Combo™?) or, perhaps, how I could go
about figuring it out (or, preferably, even fixing it)?

I'm trying to do something a little weird and I'd like some help. It has
to do with tabs.
The local coding standard is to indent with hard tabs, 8 characters wide.
So far so good. But we want to avoid tabs within the line, after the
first non-whitespace character. Example:
int foo = 1234; // foo
int bar = 5678; // bar
int foobar = 12345678; // foobar
So before the "int" there should be a hard tab, but before the "=" and
"//" characters there should just be spaces. I'd like to use the tab key
for all of this (ie., <tab> i n t <space> f o o <tab> = 1 2 3 4 ...),
changing its behavior from hard tabs to soft tabs depending on where I am
within the line.
I wrote a command script that will actually do this and bound it to the
tab key with Activation: Key Equivalent. But, unfortunately stealing the
tab key like this breaks ordinary tab triggers and tabbing between snippet
fields.
Anyone have suggestions on how overload the tab key without losing what
it already does? I'd also accept some way of binding tab triggers
and snippets to some other keystroke.

Hi guys!
Trying out and loving textmate!
Got a question. on the HTML screen cast, it has img(tab) and image(tab) as
being bundle items for filling out self closing image tags for HTML.
Can't seem to get it working here.
I have the document as HTML, did a search
in "Select Bundle Item" for "img" and "image" and nothing comes up.
In the HTML bundle in the editor, nothing.
I can make a entry for it, but from the screen cast it looks like something
else is wrong with my setup.
Any ideas? Am I missing a key bundle?
Thanks!
Mikel
Hi!
I read on the blog-comments that someone has snippets for adding
technorati-tags to his blog-post.
I would really appreciate it if someone could send me those (and
maybe those could be added to the blogging-bundle?).
Does the Blogging bundle supports pinging to sites like Technorati?

Hi there....
I'm new to the list, but have been keeping tabs on the progress of
the AS bundle
(and sometimes using either get bundle or svn, i dont get the changes
your blog posts mention... but thats another point)
I agree with Aaron regarding -main being optional... for a few reasons:
a. main sort of binds us to either ignoring some of the benefits of
library based movie clips or using _root
b. some of my clients, are small studios, designers and other small
teams.... some of them have decent actionscript skills some have
people on staff that can really rock it.... but forcing a swfmill -
mtasc - textmate workflow would simply not work or be more than a
little unjust...
I use textmate/mtasc/swfmill to improve MY life and workflow, it
saves me time, the strictness helps me debug and it doesnt crash, i
hate the flash IDE.
But months down the line or right before launch on a project I've
long since moved on from i hate clients calling me for small pitlling
changes pulling me off other projects to do small maintanence tasks,
or helpt them tweak a now completed project by nudging things here
and there when they or there staff are more than capable. I
externalize all content, but still things continually come up that
normally any number of them would be able to do themselves via the IDE.
Adding a call to my controller class in the flash, populating the
library and then compiling it once and never touching the IDE again,
works well for me, (i customized my rb file to not call main) this
allows my clients to then open the fla if they need to down the road,
make their changes and compiling with the ide where they feel more
comfortable. But as soon as i share it with someone who has a similar
workflow, and the main call loops ad-infinitum.
Ok, so i rant a bit, but sharing across workflows is enough reason to
make -main optional.... no?
Also is there any way to avoid needing to list our classes in the
main class? It feels like including code to force compile inside the
application really mucks things up in regards to separating build
instructions from the code itself... i guess thats an MTASC issue
more than an actionscript bundle issue, i tried using -pack to work
around this but then I got class redefinition errors on the main
class....
cheers,

Ahoy TextMateys…
I like the cocoa completion menu thing.
Open TextEdit. Type a few letters. Hit option-escape.
I want to make a tm_dialog nib that works exactly like that one does.
Does anyone know if that is at all possible?
I like the current dialog menu that we have with tm_dialog --menu.
But it's really not ideal for doing code completion.
What would need to happen is that while you're typing you can open up
the completion panel, but keep on typing.
Escape would banish the panel
Up and down would move the selection in the completion list
and insert the rest of what you're typing
and select it
right would banish the list and keep the currently selected completion
etc...
Is that at all doable?

When I got the latest TextMate update, I was happy to see that
incremental search is put in. That makes me very happy, since Ctrl-s
is imprinted in my Emacs-brain.
Getting into the incremental search works fine, but when I see
something I want to edit, how do I get out of the search mode without
using the mouse? Again, copying Emacs, I should just use a cursor
key, but instead it seems that I have to use the mouse button.
Anyone have another method that I missed?

Does the Show Web Preview command in Textmate 1.5.5 (Build 1372) have
a problem displaying text sized in ems? For some reason, text set in
a style sheet at 0.8 ems doesn't display at the same size as when the
page is viewed in the latest versions of Safari, Firefox, Camino and
OmniWeb.
On a possibly related note: does TextMate use Webkit for Web Preview
and, if so, is it possible to have TextMate use a nightly WebKit
build instead of the version Safari is based on?
I've searched the archives and couldn't locate any other discussions
about this.

Hi there,
is there any way of populating a dropdown with a Hash/Array from Ruby,
using tm_dialog?
I'm using a custom Nib, but I don't have too much experience with
Interface Builder.
Dummy code:
categories = ["bar","baz"]
dialog = ENV['DIALOG']
plist = {
'title' => "Add your title",
'category' => categories # How do I use this here?
}.to_plist
str = `#{e_sh dialog} "#{NIBS}/new_message.nib/" -m -p #{e_sh plist}`
Any hints will help :)
Also... is there any way of calling tm_dialog to load a custom Nib
using the Ruby wrapper in dialog.rb?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for yours answers,
I didn't know the Select Bundle Item function, and even fewer the key search.
So I've deleted the shortcut for the declaration "try/catch" and the wrapping
work in PHP section now.
PS : Yes, it is ⌃⇧W ;)
Hi there,
today, I was doing the next step in my investigation of why
TextMate's Blogging Bundle doesn't really work together with
Serendipity. This time, I was after the strange effect around the
Date header: Whenever that header is present in the document, it
causes s9y to set the creation date to the beginning of the epoch.
Aside the fact that it changes the creation date in s9y which is not
visible anywhere in the tool besides in the sorting order of entries,
which is a flaw in s9y (it's impossible to change the creation date
via s9y's interface except by... well creating the entry), this looks
like a bug in MovableType actually.
Don't ask. Read on.
dateCreated is supposed to be passed around as dateTime.iso8601 which
in turn is defined as <year><month><day>T<hour>:<minute>:<second>
(time in GMT). This is what s9y uses and this is what the rest of the
world uses.
Except MT, that is.
Even though I searched, I found no clear definition of how the date
must be formated. In one piece of their sample code, I found this
though:
<member>
<name>dateCreated</name>
<value>
<dateTime.iso8601>
2005-12-05T21:38:47Z</dateTime.iso8601>
</value>
</member>
.. which is wrong (note the dashes in the date).
The blogging bundle defaults to the mt-mode and tries to recreate
this flawed format (parse_post in blogging.rb - I wonder what the
other T at the end does though) which in turn causes s9y to fail to
parse the date correctly and set the time stamp to 0 (which isn't
right thing to do, but I'll report that to their forum).
Manually setting TM_BLOG_MODE to s9y for example fixes the date
problem, but makes one lose comment-toggling-functionality (the ping
one currently isn't implemented on s9y's side, but I intend to change
that with an upcoming patch).
So I created the attached patch bb_s9ydate.diff, which adds a proper
s9y mode which basically means it makes blogging.rb use the default
date handling, but still provide the comment-toggling features.
In addition to attaching the patch, I've also uploaded it here:
http://www.lipfi.ch/bb_s9ydate.diff
Please consider merging this one too as that date-thing sucks in
particular when using TextMate to edit s9y blogs :-)
Now I'm off to bug the s9y people about the creation date-problem and
about the support for toggling pings via the RPC-Interface :p
Thanks for your patience with reading this novel here :-)

Just to say that those who are waiting for an actionscript 3 bundle, I
started one.
You can find more information on http://4d.ratubagus.net/ .
This bundle is just started, so many things will be added week by week ...
Since i'm new to textmate, even i read a lot on the mailing list , the
wiki, the book ...
i've still many things to learn and i'm open to suggestions .
enjoy

Yeah I checked this. Still no luck. Take a look, see what you think.

Hello
Since the last realease of Textmate,
when I'm writing between echo's comas, the shortcut ^majW make "try-catch"
expression, I would like it wrap selection in an Open/Close tag as in HTML
bundle. How can I do this change ?
Thanks a lot
Hi,
I've been trying to reproduce the steps in the tm_dialog screencast, but failed for some reason:
If i call tm_dialog on my test nib file in the Terminal, I get this message:
tm_dialog: you have updated the Dialog plug-in to v8 but the tm_dialog tool is still at v5
I'm not quite aware of what I've updated, it's all happened automatically as far as i can tell.
Looking at the version, it seems to be "tm_dialog r6545 (Feb 12 2007) ", or possibly "tm_dialog r6021 (2006-11-16)" if I run tm_dialog or tm_dialog_v5 in Textmate (don't know whether I'm supposed to have two of these things installed?)
How can I fix this problem?
Many thanks
baptiste

Is there a way to do nested transformations in snippets?
I want to do something like:
class FooFields:
[...]
foo_form = [...]
where the Foo is easily changed. Fields should be converted to form
and the whole thing should be converted from CamelCase to
under_scored.
I can do the underscored convertion, but I can't work out how to do
another search and replace as well.
I though this might work:
class ${1:FooFields}:
[...]
${2:${${1/Fields/Form/}/([a-z0-9])?([A-Z])/(?1:$1_)(?2:\l$2)/g}} = [...]
Where the first regex is input to the second regex. But it doesn't
work. Instead it doesn't seem to recognise the regex as a regex at
all and outputs:
class FooFields:
[...]
{1/Fields/Form//([a-z0-9])?([A-Z])/(?1:FooFields_)(?2:\l{1/Fields/Form/)/g}}
= [...]
Whilst writing this I have realised that I can just do:
class ${1:Foo}Fields:
[...]
${2:${1/([a-z0-9])?([A-Z])/(?1:$1_)(?2:\l$2)/g}}_form = [...]
Which is good enough as a solution, but I'd still like to know if
there is a way to solve the problem using nested regexs?
Many Thanks

Newbie here, please excuse the apparent non-TextMate related
question. Has anyone seen a bundle or suggestions on using tidy (or
something) to convert old style HTML to newer transitional XHTML
without screwing up embedded PHP (or other) code? It seems that by
default tidy can really fowl up embedded PHP structures. I have a lot
of old PHP-based documents that I'd like to get somewhat brought up-
to-date.
Thanks,
Ron

Hi every one,
I haven't been able to find any post about the topic, but I must admit the
number of post containing command and completion is indeed quite impressive.
Here is my problem. I'm French and I'm using an azerty keyboard. I can't use
the default (command - option - }) “LaTeX command completion based on
current word” shortcut. On an azerty keyboard, please note it must be typed
(command - option - shift - ‘)’) and that the ‘)’ is located two keys left
from the delete key, next to the upper figure ‘0’. Worse, even when I try to
change the shortcut to (command - option - shift - ‘)’), it doesn't work. In
fact, it looks like the shortcut doesn't trigger a thing.
I currently worked around the problem using (command - control - option -
‘)’) 4-fingers “shortcut”, but I'd like to switch back to normal. Do you
have any idea of the reason why (command - option - ‘)’) does not work? I've
been looking for such a shortcut in TextMate but haven't been able to find
one.
Thank for your help and my appologies for the potential bad spelling.

Sent from the textmate users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
G;day all,
I'm an infrequent TM user, as I spend 90% of my time in FileMaker
Pro, but do some occasional work in XSLT. I was wondering if someone
could help with an issue with indenting in XML. I've got some code
that looks like the following as output in XML :
<Style>
<Data>Some text Here.</Data>
</Style>
<Style>
<Data>Some text Here.
Some more text here.</Data>
</Style>
This has been indented using the "Indent Selection" option.
Obviously I'd like it to work the same on the second set of text as
it does on the first. I'm told you can change this via the bundle,
but grep and regex are like greek to me. Is this something I can
modify, or this maybe intended behaviour?
Thanks,
Nick
Apologies for using bandwidth on the main mailing list, but my attempt to
contact textmate-owner(a)lists.macromates.com bounced with a "not allowed
to post" message, though I am subscribed to the list. The message I sent to
the owner follows:
Hi,
Is there any way to get a *daily* digest from the textmate-request
list? I am receiving several e-mails each day, all relatively small sized,
instead of a single digest per day. Each of these is labelled
"textmate Digest"
and carries a few messages, rarely more than five to seven. I understand,
when the digest reaches a reasonably large size having it split up, but today,
so far (and the day is only half over here), I have received digests at
0:19+0000 16K textmate Digest, Vol 31, Issue 14
3:14+0000 20K textmate Digest, Vol 31, Issue 15
6:41+0000 17K textmate Digest, Vol 31, Issue 16
12:00+0000 9K textmate Digest, Vol 31, Issue 17
15:53+0000 15K textmate Digest, Vol 31, Issue 18
That's a total of 77K in five separate messages; looking back over time, it
seems as if no digest is ever allowed to grow much over 20K (the largest
since I subscribed is 30K and there is only one of those; most are 20K or
below). That seems way too low for a *digest*. The digests from the gcc
list, for example, are regularly in the 50-80K range, and are much more
useful in keeping related topics together than the textmate list is. Thanks
in advance for your response.

Hello,
I'm trying to use dialog.rb to open custom made dialogs (Nibs) in Ruby
but so far have not succeeded.
Reading the code, it looks like this should work:
Dialog.new(:nib => "path/to/nib")
but I get an error.
I'm using shell code now, but would love to use the nicer Ruby syntax ;)
Any advice?
Thanks in advance

Here's another snapshot, for those who are interested.
I've made it into its own bundle for the moment, for ease of installation.
This version should have more robust error handling, and does its best to
work
with the 3.6.x versions of GV. (Unfortunately they're all pretty buggy — the
best
version is still 3.5.8 — but it does its best.)
Many thanks to Zettt, who went out of his way yesterday to help me identify
the problems he was having.
PDF support will come in a later version, which I'll probably call 2.0. (You
might
like to mentally prepend "0." to all these version numbers. This is clearly
still
alpha code.)

Here's a script I hacked together last night.
If you're writing something with lots of complicated diagrams (like my
thesis, to pick an example at random) then you often have to go through
several compile-view-edit cycles before any particular diagram looks right.
This involves a lot of tedious waiting. The obvious way to speed it up is to
try and reduce the time between making an edit and seeing the results.
Hence this script. The idea is that you can 'watch' a LaTeX document, so
that whenever you save a change the display is updated as quickly as
possible to reflect the change.
The script is currently somewhat inflexible in its assumptions. It compiles
.tex -> .dvi -> ps, and uses gv as the PostScript viewer. If other people
are interested, I can certainly make it more configurable. That's why I'm
posting it here.
The reason for the aparently-perverse choice of gv as the viewer is that
ps2pdf is really, really slow, so if you want a fast cycle – and you're
using PostScript specials – you need to view the DVI or PS directly. I don't
know a DVI previewer that works with the PostScript specials I use, so that
leaves PS. I don't know of anything else for the mac that can display PS as
quickly as gv (I'd love to be enlightened here), and gv is very pleasant to
use once you get used to its idiosyncratic interface.
Anyway, that means you'll need to have X11.app and gv installed for it to
work. As I say, this can potentially be changed, but that's the current
situation. You also need to have gv in your $PATH.
Apart from avoiding PS->PDF conversion, the main trick I use to speed up the
update cycle is to build a custom TeX format file for the document. The
preamble – i.e. anything before \begin{document} – is compiled into a
special format when the file is watched. Thereafter, when the file is
updated, the preamble is merely inspected to see whether it has changed. If
it hasn't, the previously-generated format is used. Assuming you don't
change the preamble very often, this is a big win if you load a lot of large
packages. It halves the compile time of the document I'm currently working
on.
Attached are two files:
Watch document.tmcommand
A TextMate command that invokes the watcher. Copy this into your favourite
bundle. (If you try to watch a file that's already being watched, you're
given the option to stop watching it. Alternatively you can just close gv,
and it will stop watching. Note that quitting TextMate will *not* stop the
watcher.)
latex_watch.pl
A Perl script that does the real work. This should be placed in the
directory Support/bin inside the same bundle that you copied the command
into. (You probably need to create that directory.)
If something doesn't work, you _should_ get a nice error dialog telling you
what went wrong.
I'd really appreciate any feedback. I think that, with some more
flexibility, something like this could be useful to a lot of people.

I have an NFS share from my linux server and mount this on my Mac.
This NFS share is an svn working copy and its repo is local to the
same server. So the svn url is file:///path_to_repo/trunk.
If I try to use the subversion bundle in TextMate, it tries to use
direct file access to the repo instead of svn+ssh access. Is there a
way I can let TextMate know to use svn+ssh for this working copy?
thanks, ke han
Hi there
Am loving GTDAlt - I've tried 'em all and this is the one for me it seems.
I notice that in the latest build of TM, that when I attempt to set a
date for an action, an error is generated:
/tmp/temp_textmate.Ie4gRD:3:in `require': No such file to load --
/Library/Application Support/TextMate/Support/lib/plist (LoadError)
from /tmp/temp_textmate.Ie4gRD:3
Any clues on this would be appreciated.

Does anyone use http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/? It doesn't work
in TextMate's open dialog, but seems to work in every other. That's very...
very... very sad, and very, very painful. Anyone know why that might be? Any
idea how I might get it to work? The only thing I notice is that TextMate
has a 'Show hidden files' option; so wonder if its using a custom dialog
instead of the standard one.
Thanks in advance.

I am unable to use the File/New from Template/Python/* menu item, or to
create a new file in an open project, by any of the available means
(application File menu, control-click in project drawer, use gear icon
menu). I gather, from following several different Google searches, that my
problem(s) has/have something to do with the search path that Textmate is
using to look for the template files, but I can find no information
regarding what I have to change or how I have to change it to make the
correct path(s) available to TM.
I know that the Python.tmbundle file lives in "/Library/Application
Support/TextMate/Bundles/", but when I add that directory to my PATH in
~/.bash_profile, that doesn't change anything.
I would be really, really grateful for a simple "do it this way" solution to
my problem.
Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I'm using a regular expression to find groups of text that I need to
replace. But instead of replacing the actual text that I have
selected, I want to simply append some text to the end of the line
that has been returned. For example, if I search in the project,
retrieving ten different lines of code, how to do I insert a specific
string of text (e.g. "Put this text at the end of the line") at the
end of each of those lines?
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks in advance!
Everyone/Anyone,
I'm new to Textmate (and just about everything else), and I just
finished reading the Textmate book (some sections got a thorough once-
twice-thrice-over). Very good book, now I'm hooked on Textmate.
I'm just an amateur web developer looking to increase my skill and
knowledge. Textmate has been a great companion as It allows me to get
out of Dreamweaver and into the code, but I find that I have lost
some of the "project management" features of Dreamweaver. ie, being
able to transparently upload completed development files from within
the application. (Sure I can still get it done with Transmit, but it
is clunky.) I searched the textmate discussions and wiki and came
away with the conclusion that SVN is the answer. Problem is I know
nothing about SVN... or where to start.
So, my question is... "What is SVN, can I really use it to manage a
production website, and what is the best place, resource, book to get
information on how to install, configure, and use it?" Sounds dumb
right. Well we all have to start somewhere.
(I googled it and found more information than I can shake-a-stick
at. So I thought that I would ask a smaller community that may
better understand my situation and give a little more intelligent mac-
oriented feedback.)
Thanks,
Ethan
So, my copy of JEG2's TextMate book has arrived down under, and I'm
really enjoying getting a better understanding of TextMate.
Being an avid AppleScripter, this was my first attempt at a bundle
command--to look up a selection in a FileMaker database:
osascript <<-ENDSCRIPT
set title to "${TM_SELECTED_TEXT}"
if title ≠ "" then
tell application "FileMaker Pro Advanced"
if not (exists window "HachetteTitles") then open alias
"Path:To:My:Database.fp7"
set cell "_Search" of layout "Titles" to title
do script "Search For Title"
set href to cell "_Search" of layout "Titles"
set img to cell "_thumb" of layout "Titles"
end tell
if href ≠ "" then set title to img & href
end if
return title
ENDSCRIPT
I know this script method works fine outside of TextMate, but no
matter what I do I get errors running it inside TextMate:
31:32: syntax error: Expected “then”, etc. but found unknown token.
(-2741)
I'd certainly appreciate any help diagnosing this one.

Hi everybody,
I have been using Textmate together with PDFView on my powerbook w/
out any problems.
Recently I moved my account to Mac OS X Server. And it won't work
till then.
On the local machine I installed Latex/Textmate/PDFView.
A test with Texshop worked w/out any problems. But when I cmd-R in
Textmate no
preview is shown (the pdf is typesetted correctly, though).
TM_LATEX_VIEWER is set to PDFView, but nothing happens.
What do I need to do?
Thanks

Looks like I answered my own question here. It seems that tidy
requires ALL PHP start tags to be <?php and not just a <?. Hummm,
bummer, but that's ok, I think I can live with that. Thanks and sorry
for the bother.

====================
I have a lot
of old PHP-based documents that I'd like to get somewhat brought up-
to-date.
Thanks,

If I write (a perfectly valid HTML4):
<div id=foo>
TextMate highlights everything up to next quoted string as an ID
attribute. The fix for it is to set:
end = '(?<=''|")|(?!>)';
for tag-id-attribute in HTML's language definition.
There's even no scope for non-quoted attributes. I've managed to add it
using back-assertions (?<=[^=]) for attribute and (?<==) for scope of
uquoted string.
I'm not sure if these are proper solutions - does TM understand something
like 'adjacent scopes'?

I'm new to TextMate, but after reading James Gray's book, I'm eager to
become a "power user"...
I installed the Perforce bundle (using the GetBundle bundle) and just
tried it for the first time. I selected Perforce->Diff With Base with
a file open that I've already ran `p4 edit` on in the command-line,
and I get:
Perforce client error:
Connect to server failed; check $P4PORT.
TCP connect to perforce failed.
perforce: host unknown.
I double-checked that $P4PORT is set properly, and I can run Perforce
fine from Terminal (and from BBEdit). Do I need to do something else
to setup the bundle? (Is there a way to find documentation for
bundles that I haven't found yet?)
I also noticed that all the key equivalents in the Perforce bundle are
"^$". Is this a sign of some kind of problem?

Hello. I'm sure the people that set this up have a better
understanding of things than I do, but I'm curious…
Why are all the functions listed in the "Completions" preferences and
listed in the functions.txt file that's used by the "Completions for
Word" command?
Couldn't the Completions preferences be changed to something like this:
{ completionCommand = 'cut -d % -f 1 "$TM_BUNDLE_SUPPORT"/
functions.txt | grep -i "^$TM_CURRENT_WORD"'; }
So the list of functions would only need to be maintained in one place?
FWIW, I tried the above, and `"$TM_BUNDLE_SUPPORT"/functions.txt`
doesn't seem to be pointing the file. I got it to work by giving the
explicit complete path to the file, but that's obviously not what we
want stored in the preferences by default. Could it be that
TM_CURRENT_WORD is defined in the Preferences context, but
TM_BUNDLE_SUPPORT is not?

Hi,
would it be possible to set a selection in the current document by
using a tmCommand?
Example:
('|' is indicating the caret position)
-This is a te|xt line.
I invoke a tmCommand which calculates the starting point of a
selection, and it sets the selection to e.g.
('[' and ']' indicate the selection)
-This [is a te]xt line.
Thanks!

Thanks, Charilaos (cool idea). Unfortunately, this won't work well
in my situation because the point of the snippet is to assign some
HTML text to a PHP variable, like this:
$myVar = <<<EOQ
<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0">
<tr align="left" valign="middle">
<td>
Data
</td>
</tr>
</table>
EOQ;
The macro would place the caret to the left of the indented $myVar
string, then run my snippet (which would not work properly).
Allan's solution looks promising, but I cannot figure out where the
place this key in the snippet's plist file:
<key>disableOutputAutoIndent</key>
<true/>

Hi. I have the following TM snippet (scope = source.php, tab trigger
= eoq):
<<<EOQ
${0}
EOQ;
My snippet works fine, except: the trailing EOQ needs to always be
placed at the beginning of a line. Currently, the trailing EOQ winds
up at the same indent position as the beginning "<<EOQ".
Does someone know of a way to move the caret to the beginning of a
line within a snippet? Alternatively, is it possible to call a macro
from a snippet? I know I can build a macro that presses the command
and left arrow keys, which will move the caret to the beginning of
the line.
Thanks in advance. --Cliff
Hi,
is there any difference to insert something as snippet by using a
normal tmSnippet and tmCommand which is set to the output 'Insert as
Snippet' and input 'selected text or line'?
My problem:
I have a document containing the line:
build_cpu=`echo $ac_cv_build | sed 's/^\([^-]*\)-\([^-]*\)-\(.*\)$/
1/'` ;
At the end of that line I'd like to insert a snippet '${1:Hallo}
World'. If I do it via a tmSnippet it works perfectly. But if I write
a tmCommand à la:
Command:
in=$(cat)
caret=$TM_COLUMN_NUMBER-1
lnhead=${in:0:$caret}
lnend=${in:$caret}
echo -en "$lnhead\${1:Hallo}World$lnend"
Output: Insert as Snippet
Input: sel. text or line
it crashes, meaning TM inserts: 'build_cpu= ; HalloWorld'.
Maybe TM has some problems while parsing the line? But as tmSnippet
it works?
If you change the output to 'Show as Tooltip' the command did the job
correctly. I only can guess that if in the line occurs a '$' TM will
have problems. And if this is true, what can I do? I already tried to
escape all '$' in the variable 'in' but no success.
Any hint would be very helpful. The example as tmCommand I attached
to this mail.
Thanks,
Hans
Hi.
I'm having some problems with textmate jumping in the encoding. I
have e.g. a website which is saved in iso-8859-1 and correctly opened
in the same format.
I then have some text from a word file that i copy. This text is in
danish, so it have some of the danish letters (æøå).
When I paste this into the before mentioned document in Textmate, the
whole document changes to UTF-8. Because of this when I save it and
upload it, all the dansih letters becomes garbage text (because it
tries to open it as a iso-8859-1 as I have specified).
The same thing happens in Textmate if i try reopen it as iso-8859-1
But is there any reason for Textmate to change the encoding of the
document just because I paste some text, and can I avoid it ?

Hi,
I have a tiny suggestion.
For me it is often the case that I have to replace, let's say hex
\x0B (TAB INDENTION), with '\n'. If I do it using TM's Find/Replace
dialog it takes several minutes for a file with 400 lines and, let's
say 4000 occurrences of '\x0B'. Furthermore TM occupies a lot of my
CPUs.
If I do the same by using the 'Filter-Command' with e.g. 'perl -npe s/
\x0B/\n/g' it only takes a few seconds.
I could image that the speed problem arises if the Find/Replace
routine has to insert '\n'.
Would it make sense to include an option or button within the Find/
Replace dialog, like 'External Replace All' or whatever, to call an
external maybe perl/sed/ruby routine to do the job, esp. if I want to
insert many NEW LINES?
I don't know what kind of disadvantages it would have.
Of course, one could write a tmCommand with a dialog to do it (or
using the Filter command), but in order to avoid additional typing I
would suggest to include such a functionality within TM's Find/
Replace dialog. Esp. for users who don't know the syntax to write
such a regular expression would it be helpful, I think.
Cheers,
Hans

I want to contribute some patches to the Perforce bundle, but I need
to clear up some confusion first...
http://macromates.com/wiki/Bundles/HowToContribute tells me to start
by checking out the latest version into ~/Library/Application
Support/TextMate/Bundles. (That's where the Perforce bundle is now,
which I downloaded using the GetBundle bundle.)
But http://macromates.com/textmate/manual/bundles#installing_a_bundle
tells me to create /Library/Application\ Support/TextMate/Bundles/ and
install them there.
Then I'm further confused by the following in
http://macromates.com/wiki/Bundles/HowToContribute:
> Normally it is not recommended that you checkout bundles to the above
> location [~/Library/..., I guess], because when you change the bundle

So what should I do? Should I check out the Perforce bundle to
/Library/... or ~/Library/...? Should I ignore the instructions to
create a symbolic link, since I haven't done a full checkout to
/Library/...?

I'm running the cutting edge (1372) TextMate, with an unmodified Markdown
bundle, and the Links submenu in the bundle menu does not have any items; it
doesn't even open.
This is true regardless of the mode of the file I'm in, and regardless of
what (if anything) I have selected.
Is this a known regression?

Not to be taken literally, internally, or seriously.
I've noticed a little typo (i think) in the TODO bundle
It's in the CHANGED part.
It wasn't case sensitive and after a quick look i saw
{ :label => "CHANGED", :color => "#008000", :regexp => /CHANGED
[\s,:]+(\S.*)$/i },
the "i" was missing and the end of the regex
Maybe it was done on purpose .. then i didn't say anything

Hi all.
First post here. I am testing Textmate on our Macpro (Quad 2.66GHz, 4Gb) and
we have tried
to load a big file (~300Mb) without success. We got the "Out of memory"
message after a
few seconds. Is there a size limit for file sizes in textmate ?
I understand most users would not have to handle big files but sometimes
this happens here.

Sergio

I've tried to make the citation and bibliography commands detect
where your installation is, so that you shouldn't have to set any
environment variables for those any more. So once again, those brave
among you and with no paper deadlines, please remove any special PATH
specifications that you had made just for LaTeX TM (likely based on
previous recommendations by me), and let me know if the commands
still work for you, and if not then also where, to the best of your
knowledge, your tex binaries are. (Probably doing: "which kpsewhich"
from the terminal should give that to you.
Thank you all again for your patience in this transitive period.

but both syntaxes would be nice. I couldn't quite make out in the
manual the best way to go about this. I can make a copy of the bundle
package but then what?

I have been a long time emacs user and recently discovered TextMate.
One of the things I am missing is a "convenient" code navigation tool,
a la cscope (find from where a function is called, where the
definition of a function is, ...)
Maybe there is a built-in/standard way for doing such a thing in
TextMate, but didn't find it.
I just wrote the first version of a Cscope bundle that :
1. automatically builds a cscope index for files in a project
(including projects imported from Xcode) ;
2. allows to find from where a function is called (mapped to Ctrl-C)
3. allows to find where a function is defined (Ctrl-F)
Since I am very new to TextMate, I am sure I broke some conventions:
comments / ideas for enhancements are welcome.
You can download it from here:

Since you bring it up - what VCS are people using on OS X? Is there

I posted the following to MacResearch, with no luck, but I'm hoping
there are some Textmate users that might be able to help me:
Does anyone have any experience sending data to Igor Pro from python?
I'm looking for a way to interface python to Igor Pro. I am using
TextMate to write python code that writes a data file. I manually
open the file with Igor Pro, set up a plot and then, when I re-run
the python script to make a different data file, I want to send an
instruction from python to igor to reload a data file, and that way
Igor will automatically
replot a graph. Apparently one can control Igor Pro via applescript
(which I haven't learned yet), and there is a python package called
appscript (http://appscript.sourceforge.net/) that can mimic
applescript. So,
1) does anyone have a sample applescript that can tell Igor Pro to
load a data file?
2) does anyone have an "appscript" (http://
appscript.sourceforge.net/) that would achieve the same end?

There are quite a few blog experienced folks here so I hope you
excuse the OTness:

Are there alternatives that address the above issues?

I'm working on a Latex document that uses a lot of complex sub- and
superscripts,
so I wrote a little snippet
_{$1}
which is activated by the underscore key (and the corresponding thing for ^,
of course).
I use this a *lot*, and it has saved my brain a lot of confusion, and my
right little finger
a lot of wear and tear. But it also has a benefit that I wasn't expecting:
when I've finished
typing the subscript, I can just press tab to escape from the braces, and
continue with
the rest of the expression.
I find that invaluable, and I've started to get frustrated that the same
thing doesn't work
with ordinary auto-completed braces, parentheses, etc. Of course I could
write a snippet
{${1:$TM_SELECTED_TEXT}}
and bind it to the { key, but then you don't get the nice feature that
deleting the opening
brace will delete the closer as well. It would be nice to have the best of
both worlds. How
about making it possible to tab out of *all* auto-paired thingies, in the
way that you can
from a snippet?

TeX flags errors by a line that starts with "! "; but the LaTeX Log format
doesn't treat them as anything special so there's no way to make them stand
out. Could we change the invalid.illegal definition to the following
{ name = 'invalid.illegal';
match = '.*Error|^! .*';
},
or something along those lines? And while I'm on the subject, the
firstLineMatch seems rather restrictive. Could it be generalised to:
firstLineMatch = 'This is (pdfe)?TeXk?, Version ';
since not everyone uses non-standard extensions (the 'k' suffix) nor even
PDFTeX?

If people can't configure their autoresponders sanely (let me guess, it's Exchange...) could we just unsubscribe them?
I get enough mail as it is without having to deal with moronic autoresponders...

Hi,
I'm having trouble getting the "Backup when saving" command documented at
http://macromates.com/wiki/Main/Howtos#BackupOnSave to work.
I implemented everything as specified, but nothing happens when I Cmd-S
(save) a file. I'm suspecting there might be a problem with the environment
variables somehow.
Has anyone had success with this command?
Rudolph
Is is possible? Can't figure out how to do it if it is...
Thanks,
Michael

I've encounter a couple of problems when I work with a file that's opened in
two separate windows.
First if I select and copy text in one window and past it into the second
window, when I return to the first window the selection doesn't disappear
when I click somewhere else on the page. I need to cursor over the selection
to force a redraw to remove the selection appearance.
Second when I perform any sort of editing on one window and Command+` to the
second window (and before using the mouse to click on the second window's
edit area) the insertion point is moved to the top of the page so that any
subsequent keyboard activity results in the page redrawing at the top of
page. I then have to relocate the line that I was originally at.
This makes any sort of editing between two views of the same file using a
keyboard a pretty frustration experience.
I'm not going to mention a request for a split window as I think that one's
been requested enough in the past. ;-)
Thanks,
Ed
Thanks guys for the help. Not a perfect solution, as there is about a 5
increase/decrease difference between desired print and screen font size, but
repeating the keystroke in the script works.
All the best,

In fact, it was your work that inspired me to take the next step. If
it's okay with you, there are some automations in your ScreenMate
piece that I would like to dissect and re-use/adapt for the kind of
writing I do -- mostly essays. (I should note that I actually do do
some screenwriting, but, since it's for a series of documentary
shorts I'm doing with Louisiana Public Broadcasting, most of my
screenwriting is in the field, on a notepad while we're driving or
while the crew shifts gear around.)
On that note, let me say how thankful I am for your work on
ScreenMate and James' work on the book and everyone else being so
helpful on this list. I don't follow large chunks of the discussion,
but I read it all in hopes of some form of intellectual osmosis
happening.

Hi,
Some information for those who are interested in using the textmate
footnotes plugin described in the PragProgrammer Textmate book, who
have updated ruby recently, and who might be having some problems.
I recently updated to Rails 1.2.3 and Ruby 1.8.6 on my intel MacBook
Pro. I tried installing the Footnotes plugin for Rails/textmate using
the Rails bundle install plugin command and got the following error
that started as so:
/usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/i686-darwin8.7.1/rbconfig.rb:7: ruby lib
version (1.8.5) doesn't match executable version (1.8.6) (RuntimeError)
After googling extensively, I found the following explanation and fix
on the wincent.com site:
<http://wincent.com/knowledge-base/
Building_and_installing_Ruby_1.8.6_on_Mac_OS_X_Tiger>
It appears that I had previously set the RUBYLIB shell variable in my
~/.bash_profile file to point to:
RUBYLIB="/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8:/usr/local/lib/ruby/
site_ruby/1.8/i686-darwin8.7.1:/usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8:/usr/local/lib
/ruby/1.8/i686-darwin8.7.1"
export RUBYLIB
I think I had followed some online recipe a few versions ago to
install Ruby and Rails on my computer.
So this entry created a mismatch between the correct lib directory
for ruby 1.8.6 and the current version of ruby.
Removing this line from the .bash_profile fixed the plugin error for me.
Hope this helps someone else avoid some frustrations.

Uh, "me too!" and "thanks!" to you both for asking and answering this
question. I had just assumed the delay was something I had to live with.

I have not found any documentation on this so I'm asking everyone on
this list.
How do I change the time delay between selecting text and clicking in
the middle of it and being able to drag it?
If I click and start to drag I loose my selection. If I wait after
clicking for about 2 sec. it will allow me to drag and drop the text
selection.
This is a really frustrating delay that TextWrangler does not have
and slows me down.
I'm assuming this is some sort of feature that the devs. thought
would be helpful?
Is there anyway to turn this "feature/bug" off?
Thanks

Does anyone know if it is possible to change TextMate's display font via
Applescript. I'd like to do this so that I can work in one font size, and
print in another.
Advance thanks for any help.

Has anyone here downloaded and installed Prince? I'm increasingly
happy using TextMate for almost all of my writing and so I thought to
give the CSS + XHTML route a go. I downloaded Prince and ran
install.sh both as root (using sudo) and as a regular user. But when
I go to use Prince or ask for help -- "prince -- help" all I get is
this:
/usr/local/bin/prince: line 3: /usr/local/lib/prince/bin/prince: No
such file or directory
/usr/local/bin/prince: line 3: exec: /usr/local/lib/prince/bin/
prince: cannot execute: No such file or directory
I know this is off-topic for this list, but I was hoping someone here
was working towards a similar workflow and had done it successfully.

Haris,
In general, I believe that you can use plain tex commands, but
ConTeXt also provides a complete macro
set built on TeX, so that you do not need to use plain TeX commands.
I've attached a good template file from Sanjoy Mahajan that you can
typeset in TeXShop.

\title{Hello, world!}
Here is a hello-world template document to illustrates a few \ConTeXt\
features. Have fun. You can find a lot more information at
\from[wiki]; the preceding text should be colored and clickable, and
clicking it should take you to the wiki.
\subject{A list}
Here is an example of a list.
\startitemize[a] % tags are lowercase letters
\item first
\item second
\item third
\stopitemize
\subject{Math}
An equation can be typeset inline like $e^{\pi i}+1=0$, or as a
displayed formula:
\startformula
\int_0^\infty t^4 e^{-t}\,dt = 24.
\stopformula
% don't use $$...$$ (the plain TeX equivalent)
You can also have numbered equations:
\placeformula[eq:factorial-example]\startformula
\int_0^\infty t^5 e^{-t}\,dt = 120.
\stopformula
And you can refer to them by name. I called the previous equation {\tt
factorial-example}, and it is equation \in[eq:factorial-example].
\ConTeXt\ figures out the number for you. And with interaction turned
on, you can click on the equation number to get to the equation.
\subject{Text with figures}
Now text with a few figures. The first figure goes on the right, with
the paragraph flowing around it.
\placefigure[right,none]{}{\externalfigure[dummy]}
\input tufte
The next figure will go inline, like a displayed formula:
\placefigure[here,none]{}{\externalfigure[dummy]}
\input tufte
Here's another reference to the numbered equation -- equation
\in[eq:factorial-example] on \at{page}[eq:factorial-example], so that
you can test clicking on it or on the page reference.
% most plain TeX commands work
\vfill
\noindent
\framed[corner=round, width=\textwidth,height=1in,
backgroundcolor=gray,background=color]
{This document is in the public domain, so that you can improve it,
share
it, and otherwise do what you want with it.
Suggestions are welcome. You can send them to me
at \from[sanjoy] (Sanjoy Mahajan).}

Hi,
I noticed some weird indentation problem when using "Insert as
Snippet" as the output for a command. I reduced it to a simple test
case (at least I hope):
Make a command with
Output: "Insert as Snippet"
Command: echo -n "$TM_SELECTED_TEXT"
Example text:
✂------✂------✂------✂------
- list1
[tab]- indented list2
paragraph 1
paragraph 2
✂------✂------✂------✂------
If I select the text somewhere in the first line to the end and run
the command, nothing changes, which is good.
If I select the text somewhere after the tab in the second line to
the end I get this:
✂------✂------✂------✂------
- test list
[tab]- test indented list
[tab]paragraph 1
[tab]paragraph 2
✂------✂------✂------✂------
If I use "Replace selected text" instead, this doesn't happend.
So, if I understand this right: When a command inserts a snippet on a
indented line, everything in the snippet is indented. Why?
Just in case, I deselected "Re-indent pasted text" in the prefs,
still the same.
Am I missing something?
Thanks

Hi,
I was wondering if there's an easy to to prefix or suffix selected
lines with a string.
Anyone who has used BBEdit will know what I am taking about.
I assume there is a way to do this, but I was hoping to avoid regular
expressions other overly complex gyrations.
Thanks in advance.
I've found this topic a few times in the archives, but never came up
with a definitive answer.
I'm using Textmate for basic XHTML/CSS/JavaScript editing and while
Camino and Safari happily pop right up when I choose "Open Document
in Running Browser(s)" and Refresh when I pick "Refresh Running
Browser(s)" but Firefox responds a bit differently.
It doesn't respond at all to "Open Document in Running Browser(s)"
and Refresh Running Browser(s)" just opens a new, empty, window or tab.
It's a bit frustrating as Firefox is my browser of choice for working
on sites, thanks of course to the Web Development plugin among others.
Any advice?
Hi all.
I've just finished the 0.1 release of a command I've been working on
tonight, based on Tom Counsell's (http://tom.counsell.org/view/
ExcelToLatexTableConvertor) excel2latex, that will take an excel
table from clipboard (copy from excel. doesn't work for selected text
yet.) and run by typing excel[tab] (excel⇥').
It requires that the longtable package is included, but if you're
working with tables, you'll probably want that anyway. This isn't
perfect, you'll probably want to change the '\begin{longtable}{c c c
c c c }' to format the rows how you like, but it seems to work for me.
let me know what you think. I know this saves me a lot of time, so I
hope it will for you too.
Cheers, Al.

Hello!
Two Problems on the Latex bundle.
I have a project structure like this:
-Projectfolder
projectmain.tex (master file)
-- subfolder1
-- file_1_1.tex
-- file_1_2.tex
-- subfolder 2
-- file_2_1.tex
When I now drag file file_1_2.tex into file_2_1.tex,
I get
\include{../subfolder1/file_1_2.tex}
The problem is, that I´get an error, because the file
can not be found. The file path has to be
\include{subfolder1/file_1_2.tex}
because it depends on the master file. But when I then
invoke the command "Show outline", the file file_1_2.tex
is not found, because it expects the path as the first
statement.
Another problem is, that latex does not typeset the
files, that where included. Why does the drag command
produce a include command?
Helge
Hi,
Is there a way to setup Textmate (for Ruby on Rails development) such that
when I'm "tailing" the error log I will get different line colors for errors
based on the severity of the error?
Eg
- logger.error ('xxx') => RED
- logger.warning ('xxx') => ORANGE
- etc
Thanks in advance
Greg
Hi,
I'm looking for a way to crate a simple snippet so that tab
completion: //(tab) will insert CSS comments and wrap any text on the
line if applicable.
I've got so far as this:
/* ${1:${TM_CURRENT_LINE/(^\s+)(.+;)/$2/g}} */
$2
Which when you feed something like:
//(tab)some-property: some-value;
Produces output:
/* some-property: some-value; */
some-property: some-value;
What I would like is to delete the second instance. Is there any
way? Or, will I just have to settle for selecting the text and
create a key equivalent snippet (which means I have one snippet for
plain comment and another for wrapping...).
Oh and one other question about snippets: in the sequence ${«tab
stop»/«regexp»/«format»/«options»} what are the options? I stuck with
g because that's what I had seen.
thanks in advance,
Gabriel
Hi!
Just wondering because of the news that input managers will be banned
in Leopard. Is there already a new solution planned for "Edit in

For a bundle I'm maintaining, I wanted to be able to easily toggle
between having changes written directly to the bundle (so that I can
commit them) and having changes written to deltas (so that I can make
local customizations that are not committed).
I wrote a command for this:
http://henrik.nyh.se/2007/03/24/textmate-command-to-toggle-writing-deltas/
I'm sure others have done similar things before, but I couldn't find
anything, so I rolled my own, and thought I'd share.
If the command does something bad or unnecessary, or if you've solved
this problem in a better way, please let me (us) know.
I have lately had to use code that includes
\begin{SaveVerbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\},codes={\catcode`$=3
\catcode`^=7}]{guard}
$\lnot$busy(phone)
\end{SaveVerbatim}
The \catcode`$=3 confuses the TextMate's grammar and thus everything
that follows is treated at maths in scopes and hence in colouring.
Is there an easy solution without messing with the main language
definition?
Hi there,
after getting nagged at my blog (http://www.gnegg.ch/archives/354-
External-blogging-tools.html) to look into why TextMate's Blogging
Bundle behaves strangely with Serendipity blogs, I had a look into
the problem.
Actually, there are two problems, but so far, I've only fixed one
(it's getting late here):
1) When you have a Date:-Header in your Posting, s9y will interpret
the date wrongly and will assume it to be the beginning of the epoch
(1970-01-01). This is problably a flaw in s9y and I'll report it
there as soon as I know what's going on.
2) The Pings- and Comments-Headers were ignored and Pings/Comments
were turned off regardless of what the headers were set to. This is
what I've actually looked into this evening (GMT+1 here):
Basically it all comes down to the fact that parse_post (blogging.rb)
is unable to cope with empty headers of which s9y produces at least
one: s9y always sends an empty mt_convert_breaks-member in the post
record and when no tags are defined, it'll also send an empty
mt_keywords member.
With an unpatched blogging.rb, this will create something like this
(ignore the f*ed up date - that's caused by bug 1) above):
Type: Blog Post (Markdown)
Blog: s9y
Post: 1
Title: First entry
Date: 1970-01-01 02:00:00 +0100
Keywords:
Format:
Pings: On
Comments: On
This causes the parser to stop after the Keywords-header (lines
206/207) which will lead to the following headers to be ignored, thus
turning off comments (s9y assumes Comments=off if the information
isn't present in the RPC-call).
Now I'm not sure if s9y's behaviour is actually legal here (please
enlighten me), but I think the blogging bundle should be able to cope
with empty fields.
There are two possible fixes: One is to fix the fields-parser to make
it stop bailing out at empty fields. I've attached bb_fixparser.diff
which does that. The other way is to make post_to_document stop
adding empty format and keyword fields. bb_skipempty.diff does that.
I'm not sure which way is the correct way to go. fixparser has the
tendency of working with even more crude blogging engines, while
skipempty is what the bundle did so far (look at the handling of
mt_tags for example.
Anyways. Please consider merging one of the patches to make the
blogging bundle work better with serendipity.
Thanks
Philip
Hi Allan
How diffiicult would it be to add an option to
the folding system telling it to obey indentation
exclusively?
With this option, TextMate would become a
very nice cataloging tool for removable media:
I drag and drop the CD on a TextMate window
and the tab-indented list of the content appears.
It is already very easy to search such lists,
with folding-at-indentations it would be also
easy to navigate them.
Thanks
Piero
Hi,
We are evaluating textmate as part of a wider move from PHP to Rails. I have an issue which I hope someone here might be able to help me with...
We have a shared linux development server and we each checkout and edit our files on the server remotely either via samba shares or directly by SSHing in. This is so we can preview the changes in our dev sites as we make them.
This works OK for the windows guys (they use Tortoise svn and map a network drive to get to their files). I am OK as I am comfortable in the terminal and don't mind SSHing over to the dev server to do any subversion stuff, but we have a couple of designers who have a fear of command lines and want to work strictly within textmate. Running any SVN command from textmate fails because the samba share appears like a local directory and all the SVN commands get screwed up. It then locks their copy and we have to clean up the locks.
Is it possible to set up textmate to either tunnel the SVN commands through SSH so they run in the devserver environment as if performed in a dev server shell or switch to using a different network filesystem (SSHFS, maybe?) so that we can edit our files remotely on the development server and use SVN from within TextMate?
We'd even consider moving to another open source version control system to fix this as long as there is good support for Mac, Win and linux...
Many thanks in advance,
Matt.

Hi,
Textmate incorrectly labels italicised and bolded text.
In the following markdown: "this is s_om_e markdown", 'om' will be
tagged as italicised. When converting to HTML, 'om' will not be
italicised. I am guessing that the Markdown processor requires that
italicised text be surrounded by white space. The same is also true
for bolded text.
I was able to modify the language grammar to not incorrectly tag the
text. My solution is probably quite naive but it did work for me. Can
someone with more regex fu vet this and can we get it added to the
official bundle please (assuming it should be added and I am not
wrong on this).
Luke.
I've been toying around with the idea of a PHP/HTML language
definition. The problem is that when I'm working on a PHP project, I
switch back and forth between pure PHP files and PHP/HTML files all
the time. As you can imagine, switching the language definition each
time to get proper syntax hilighting can get bothersome. It would
most likely be a huge bundle and take a lot of work, but I was just
wondering if anybody else has found any tricks for this kind of issue
before I investigate it further.
Thanks,
Michael
Hello!
I have the following Latex code.
\begin{lstlisting}[language=PBN]
[Board "<Boardnummer>"]
\end{lstlisting}
The "< starts the scopes
punctuation.definition.string.begin.latex
string.quoted.double.guillemot.latex
The scopes are still active after the code.

With this function declaration TextMate will not show it in the
symbols list. Is there anyway of importing symbollists from external
commands instead of using regexps?

Hi --
A quick request for help...
I thought there might be someone knowledgeable here about an error
that cropped up for me with the latest build (1372). I apologize in
advance is this isn't the sort of thing discussed here or if I should
bring this to another forum, but since it just happened NOW, minutes
after my update, I thought this might be the place.
Anyway, I'm using GTDalt and the context command (shift-@) gives this
error after the selection from the dialog:
/Users/mcg/Applications/Text/Textmate/TextMate.app/Contents/
SharedSupport/Support/lib/dialog.rb:138: warning: Insecure world
writable dir /Users/mcg/Documents, mode 040756
Any advice. Did I do something clueless when I grabbed the latest build?
-- Michael
I am having a problem with the GTDAlt date picker. The date inserted
does not correspond to the date entered. So entering 12/03/2007 gives
me 2007-03-11. And entering 31/05/2007 gives me 2007-05-29.
While on the topic of the date picker a small issue about the UI.
Dates are entered day month year. I think it should be year month day
for two reasons:
1. That way it is consistent with what is entered in the file.
2. The date picker defaults to the current date which is now
February. Helpfully it doesn't allow you to pick a day not in that
month. So to enter in 31/05/2007 I first had to tab ahead to change
the month before entering the day (since there are not 31 days in
February). The year month day format would avoid this problem.
Thanks.
All the best, Mark

Hello all,
I use the Pascal bundle quite a bit, and I've been annoyed that it can't tell the difference between declarations/prototypes of functions and definitions of functions.
I'll give you that this is tricky - in Pascal they both mostly look the same, and what they are is really determined by the next line (which would be a BEGIN if it was a definition)
FUNCTION aTest(varName: theType);
However, there is two cases where such a difference can be seen easily: the forward keyword and the external keyword
FUNCTION aTest(varName: theType); FORWARD;
{a prototype of a function found later in the file}
FUNCTION aTest(varName: theType); EXTERNAL;
{EXTERNAL is just like C's extern keyword}
And, in GPC (the Gnu Pascal Compiler) there's also:
FUNCTION aTest(varName: theType); attribute (name = 'aTest');
{You could see this kinda like declaring a prototype in C -
functions above this in the file OR outside the file
can call this function
}
Can we make the Pascal bundle use the following regular expression in the meta.function.prototype.pascal scope (so then we can use a preference to turn off their appearance in the symbol list?
\b(?i:(function|procedure))\b\s+(\w+(\.\w+)?)(\(.+?\)); (attribute|forward|external)
Or other thoughts etc would be appreciated - this could be an inefficient way of doing this.
Thanks In Advance,
_Ryan Wilcox

Hi All,
I just got the latest build, Version 1.5.5 (1372), and I noticed that
the python language syntax is now somewhat broken for comment
characters (#) inside regular expression strings r'some regular
expression'.
like:
some_reg_string = r'#'
shows up as illegal / incomplete syntax.
And e.g. all my code following this line:
parentPattern = re.compile(r'^#extends (\w+)\s*$')
becomes:
source.python
meta.function-call.python
meta.function-call.arguments.python
which is a little confusing.

hi there,
I see in the change list that
[NEW] Perl bundle: PerlMate will now request for user input when
reading from <STDIN> (Ciarán Walsh)
This seems very handy: Does anyone have an example of a command which
does this? If it is not perl specific, are there examples of syntax
for other languages, like cmd line php?
cheers,

If I write the following snippet:
${3:x}${1:$TM_SELECTED_TEXT}$3$2
activate it, then press tab twice so the first 'x' is selected, I would
expect what I type to be mirrored in the other 'x' too. Why isn't it?
Similarly,
${1:x}${2:y}$1$2
doesn't do what I'd expect: the 'x' is mirrored, but the 'y' is not.
What am I missing?
Thanks,

I have just tried enabling using Textmate from Apple's Mail

miss from Mail is that text at different quote levels is coloured
differently. This would seem a simple enough thing to do (I would
have to do a bit of reading up though), but has anyone already done
this?

Hi,
I am a new Textmate user, and this is my first post. My initial
interest in Textmate was in using it as a python editor, although as
I learn more about it, I am interested in using it for LaTeX and
Context. The LaTeX bundle is very nice, though the ConTeXt bundle
doesn't seem to have a way to typeset the resulting file (at least as
far as I can see.) I have configured TeXShop to use Textmate as an
external editor---this works, but it is not as nice as working solely
in Textmate.
Is anyone is working on a ConTeXt bundle similar in functionality to
the LaTeX bundle?
Cheers,
-paul
Hi,
I'd link to run a shell command in a bundle and capture the output in
the html window. So I thought scriptmate.rb seems to be a good way to
go, but I am a bit clueless. Running this from the command line gives
me an error.
--------------------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/env ruby
ENV['TM_SUPPORT_PATH']="/Applications/TextMate.app/Contents/SharedSupport/Support"
$:.unshift ENV['TM_SUPPORT_PATH'] + "/lib"
require 'scriptmate'
cmd_mate("ls")
--------------------------------------------------
nil
/Applications/TextMate.app/Contents/SharedSupport/Support/lib/scriptmate.rb:92:in `waitpid': no implicit conversion from nil to integer (TypeError)
from /Applications/TextMate.app/Contents/SharedSupport/Support/lib/scriptmate.rb:92:in `emit_html'
from /Applications/TextMate.app/Contents/SharedSupport/Support/lib/scriptmate.rb:16:in `cmd_mate'
from ./parse_texrun.rb:42
And scriptmate.rb looks a bit strange to me:
....
def emit_html
emit_header()
stdout, stderr, stack_dump, pid = @command.run
....
is trying to get 4 parameters from @command.run, but UserCommand#run
only returns 3. A related question: is it possible to get a pid from
popen3?

Excellent! My first bug report and fix! Most exciting. Please
forgive my enthusiasm; I only came to programming in a serious way
about a year ago. I was 'inspired' to do so by a custom program my
company rolled out that was so astonishingly awful that I felt that I
had to demonstrate that better could be done. So, a year later, with
20+ newly purchased yet well worn O'Reilly titles on my shelf, it's
nice to be able to start contributing back to projects I like.
In addition, I have found another small problem with the Python
bundle - it has to do with the way it scopes 'meta.item-
access.python' sections.
In particular, it gets confused by the end ], and does not recognize
it as 'punctuation.definition.arguments.end.python', although it
recognizes the lead [ correctly as
'punctuation.definition.arguments.start.python'. For instance, put
the following in TextMate as Python, and note the scopes/coloring of
the []'s.
pairing_name = findNextWord(packet[row])[0]
The regexes responsible are below, along with my explanation of the
problem and proposed fix:
{ name = 'meta.item-access.python';
begin = '(?=[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*(?:\.[a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z_0-9]*)*\s*\[)';
end = '(\])';
patterns = (
{ begin = '(?=[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*(?:\.[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*)*\s*
\[)';
end = '(?=\s*\[)';
patterns = ( { include = '#dotted_name'; } );
},
{ begin = '(\[)';
end = '(?=\])';
beginCaptures = { 1 = { name =
'punctuation.definition.arguments.begin.python'; }; };
endCaptures = { 1 = { name =
'punctuation.definition.arguments.end.python'; }; };
patterns = ( { include = '$base'; } );
contentName = 'meta.item-access.arguments.python';
},
The problem is that the 'meta.item-access.python' begin regex tags a
LOCATION, specifically the location of the beginning of the first
legit Python dotted name followed by a [, thus correctly allowing the
[ itself to be matched within by
'punctuation.definition.arguments.begin.python'. However, the
'meta.item-access.python' end regex tags not the LOCATION of the
end ], but the end ] itself, thus preventing
'punctuation.definition.arguments.end.python' from selecting the
end ] as it should. In addition, the regex for
'punctuation.definition.arguments.end.python', instead of selecting
the end ], selects the LOCATION followed by an end ], which gives it
no characters in its scope!
My proposed fix swaps the two; both the start and end 'meta.item-
access.python' regexes select for LOCATION, and both
'punctuation.definition.arguments.begin.python' and
'punctuation.definition.arguments.end.python' select for the actual
CHARACTERS [ and ]. The code is below, and I have tested that it
properly scopes the Python constructs now.
{ name = 'meta.item-access.python';
begin = '(?=[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*(?:\.[a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z_0-9]*)*\s*\[)';
end = '(?<=\])';
patterns = (
{ begin = '(?=[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*(?:\.[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*)*\s*
\[)';
end = '(?=\s*\[)';
patterns = ( { include = '#dotted_name'; } );
},
{ begin = '(\[)';
end = '(\])';
beginCaptures = { 1 = { name =
'punctuation.definition.arguments.begin.python'; }; };
endCaptures = { 1 = { name =
'punctuation.definition.arguments.end.python'; }; };
patterns = ( { include = '$base'; } );
contentName = 'meta.item-access.arguments.python';
},
);
},
Hope this is helpful - I am (slowly!) looking through the rest of the
Python language definition to see if there are any other glitches I
can spot. Cheers,
Nick
When connecting to a blog over SSL, various blogging commands (e.g., Fetch Post) will include "warning: peer certificate won't be verified in this SSL session" in their output. Net::HTTP generates this warning when its verify_mode hasn't been set. It then defaults to OpenSSL::SSL::VERIFY_NONE. My patch sets it explicitly to avoid the warning.
I don't work with column editing much at all, but I do instinctively
use "select, drag, option key" to copy text. But most of the time my
clicking option gets me into column select mode.
Is there a way to remap the "select column" off of option so it'll
just drag-and-copy for me?
Thanks.
Hi,
Any tips on how to change the format of a line of Ruby based on it's
content?
In particular I was wanting to try deemphasize logging lines (i.e. starting
with "logger.*") by setting the text font to a gray. Any ideas/tips would
be great. Couldn't seem to see when it would be possible to do this in the
bundle manager.

TextMate has a syntax element called "Embedded Source", which is used
for things like the lstlisting environment in LaTeX or JavaScript
code embedded in HTML. The default background color for this element
is a light blue, which is almost identical to the light blue used for
selected text. Because of the similarity, I always get confused and
think I've inadvertently selected some embedded source. I'm wondering
why there is such a similarity between these colors. Was it
deliberate (and if so, what was the reason?) or was this an oversight?

Hey folks -
I'm trying to get up-and-running with TextMate, which I will be using
primarily for LaTeX-ing, and I'm having some troubles. I've been
using LaTeX installed via MacPorts/DarwinPorts for a few months now,
so I'd prefer to get TM working with that if possible rather than
abandoning it for MacTex (unless there is really and truly a good
reason to do so).
The main problem I'm having is that when I call the "Insert Label/
Citation Based on Current Word" command, TM spits out "The tex
binaries cannot be located!" I assume this means that I have not
properly told TM where to find my LaTeX installation, but I can't
figure out how to do so. I tried creating a PATH environment
variable equal to the output of "echo $PATH" in Terminal, but I don't
think it helped. Sorry... either I'm doing something dumb or I'm
just not unix-y enough to understand what's going on here.
Any suggestions?
Thanks very much!

Hi - I was looking over the Python language definition, and I came
upon a regex that I don't understand - or, it might be a bug. The
regex is in the FoldingStartMarker:
<key>foldingStartMarker</key>
<string>^\s*(def|class)\s+([.a-zA-Z0-9_ b]+)\s*(\((.*)\))?\s*:|\{\s*
$|\(\s*$|\[\s*$|^\s*"""(?=.)(?!.*""")</string>
The key mysterious part is right in the first character class, which
I believe is designed to pick out the name of the class/def in question:
[.a-zA-Z0-9_ b]+
Okay, I get it up until the ' b' part. Essentially, the name of a
class or def is a series of characters that are in a-z, A-Z, 0-9, or
are '_' or '.' . What's the point of the ' b' part? Was this meant
to be '\b', signifying a word boundary? Or is there some deeper
meaning to space b that I don't understand? Please forgive if this
is not an appropriate place for this question; I am rather new (well,
completely and totally new) to the use of mailing lists.
Brilliant program, btw - it takes time to appreciate it.
Nick
Hi,
Is there a way to highlight all occurances (e.g. in yellow say) of a
particular piece of text? Say a variable name for example?
Ideally also is there a way to, once such a variable is highlighted
through-out the file, you can change it in one place and it automatically
changes it in real time in other places in the file (I know I had this in
Jbuilder).

Hi,
I am trying to follow this approach in the latex-help file:
In the case where what is expected is a label, then pressing escape
will similarly offer all matching labels from the TeX document.
Depending on your naming conventions, this could for instance offer a
list of all theorems: If the labels for theorems are all of the form
thm:labelname, and you have included the colon (:) in the list of
word characters in TextMate’s preferences, then pressing escape when
the caret is right before the closing brace in \ref{thm} will offer
as completion options all labels corresponding to theorems.
If there are many matching completions, it is often more convenient
to use the pull-down-list versions of the commands, which are
triggered by ⌥⎋.
I do have ":_" (just a colon and an underscore, no quotations)in the
preference pane as Word Characters. Is this ok or do they need to be
separated / in quotations / ... ?
Neither pressing <escape> nor <escape> + <alt> while the caret is
right in front of the closing bracket in latex mode, doesn't do
anything.
Now, I looked into the bundle editor, into the latex bundle in my
installation:
1) <escape> is the key equivalent for bibdesk completion
2) <alt>+<escape> is the key equivalent for "Citation based on
Current Word / Selection" AND for "Label Based on Current Word /
Selection" --- this seems a little weird to me. Is this how it should
be originally? Or have I changed this accidently at some point?
I remember a time when hitting <escape> (I think) actually has
worked and I used "eqn:" and "fig:" for labeling and referencing
equations and figures, respectively. Should the difference between
<alt>+<escape> and <escape> only that <alt>+<escape> should offer a
pull-down list and hitting <escape> multiple times would move through
the possible choices?
Is this something that got changed over the releases (I am working
with cutting edge)? That leads me to another question: when a bundle
gets updated in the bundle repository... do those changes get updated
in each new (cutting edge) release or would I check them out and
update them as I would with any other "default" bundle?
Thanks for your help,
Claus
Hello:)
1) I know that my use of Latex is different from the majorities of
the users because I create especially packages. I need to have a
really different completion. I need for example :
newcommand
renewcommand
RequirePackage
newcounter
setcounter
stepcounter
newlength
etc..
for xkeyval
define@cmdkey
define@boolkey
presetkeys....
for ifthen
ifthenelsee etc....
etc...
I would like to know the good way to obtain this
Is it necessary that I modify LateXCommandCompletions.rb ?
2) But I do not understand why in the LateXCommandCompletions.rb,
there are words like pi, Pi, lim etc ... words with 2 or 3 letters ?
Which is the interest to complement these words?

Hi,
I'm just trying to work out how to open a recent file from within the same
project. Eg have files open in project A, close file X, then want to be
able to get a list of recently closed files in the that project which in
this case would have file X on top?
Using the Open Recent doesn't seem to offer this?

I don't think there's a default multi-select nib for tm_dialog yet,
is there? I used one that I had already created for this, so if it's
out of place please switch it out. This should be up to date with
the latest specs, the DIALOG environment variable and the previous
fallback mods to the cat command. The nib is included and should
reside in the nibs folder in the same bundle folder as blogging.rb.
Thanks,
Brett
I hope I am sending this correctly. I need assistance with the Blogging Bundle of TextMate.
Per the very helpful video I found on the site, I setup the bundle for my WordPress login. After I completed the setup, I made sure I saved it. When I attempted to Fetch Blog and entered my password for the site, I got the below error message and nothing was received:
Received Exception:HTTP error: 301 No Post are Available
I even attempted to send a blog up to my site and got, basically, the same error message.
I was using WordPress 2.0.6 when I first attempted and decided to upgrade WordPress last night to 2.1.2 (mainly because I need to also) to see if that would fix the problem, it did not.
Thank you ahead of time for your assistance.
I have been using TM for quite a while, and one of my most-used
features is the PHP syntax validation. Immediately after the latest
update (to 1.5.5 (1368)) this stopped working. Instead, I see the
following lines in place of the error / success readout:
dyld: ruby Undefined symbols:
_rb_attr_get
_rb_attr_get
_rb_ll2num
_rb_num2ll
_rb_string_value
I have tried updating Ruby to 1.8.6, and downgrading it to 1.8.4. I
have deleted and downloaded a new copy of TM. Nothing helps. I am on
10.3.9 + all patches.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?
Thanks,
Walter
I don't know if I'm using TextMate in a strange way, but: I have an HTML
blogging project open with a couple of root folders, and each of those
folders have one sub-folder for archive purposes. Every now and then I like
to archive posts from the main folder into the sub-folder, but when I do
this the sub-folder unfurls - and I really don't want this to happen. Is
there any way to stop it? A preference I can check somewhere? Why does it
open in the first place; is this behavior useful to some other workflow or
language?
Thanks for any thoughts

I was getting the wrong auto-close \end{...} tags when I pressed
apple-option-. in my LaTeX document.
The problem turns out to be caused by a bug (or design flaw) in the helper
script "$TM_SUPPORT_PATH/bin/checknest.rb", which only recognises a single

I have applied the attached patch to my copy. I admit that I haven't tested
it especially thoroughly, but it seems to work for me.
I hope this is useful.

I have started using Textmate for editing c source but seem to be
unable to customize the indentation rules to match our code convention
Here is an example of I need indentation to work
void example_function()
{
short i, n = 10;
for (i = 0; i < 10; i++)
{
do_something(i);
}
do_completion();
}
I would even be happy to do without the regular c indentation rules,
and have tried overriding them with empty patterns, but I still have
a problem when I type the semi-colon to complete the do_completion()
line as this line will get auto-indented to match the indent level of
the loop block.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

I just received this message from a user of my UTW-RPC/Autotag
combination, and I'm a little mystified. Can anyone on the list tell
me what might be the issue here? I am running the same combination
as this user and have none of these issues:

Greetings,
I just tried UTW, and got some errors. Firstly, I cannot fetch blog
posts with textmate using Brad Choates plugin when the WP plugin is
activated. I get:

for you.
Secondly, I get the following when I run 'autotag' on a blog post:

I am having trouble with citation insertion in the LaTeX bundle (both

Any ideas? I am using TM 1.5.5 (1368). Thanks in advance. All the

I just updated to the latest cutting edge version, and updated my
bundles. I wanted to try the Ruby auto complete, but either I'm doing
something wrong, or it just doesn't work.
No matter what I try to type, all I get is a tooltip saying "No
matches were found". In a Ruby/Rails document, I start typing
'validates' (without the quotes, obviously) and hit Option Escape and
get No Matches were found.
Is there something else I need to do to get this working?
Thanks,
John
While I'm here, there's an obvious typo in the "LaTeX and view" command,
which means
it fails to respect the
%!TEX TS-program = xelatex
directive. I fixed that, and also made it respect 'TS-program=latex', which
is supposed to mean
that a Latex -> DVI -> PS -> PDF compilation path should be used, rather
than PDFTeX's
straight-to-PDF compilation.
(I need this because I have a package which uses PSTricks. So although
PSTricks is being
used, the text \usepackage{pstricks} doesn't appear in my actual .tex file.)
Patch attached.

I switched from FF to Safari for a couple days because I really,
really liked the edit in TextMate option. However it only lasted for
a few days because I like FF a lot more...so I decided to give the
"It's all Text" plugin another shot. Hated it. First of all I can't
open the editor using my keyboard, and secondly when I save and close
my document it doesn't switch back to FF automatically. The edit in
TM for Safari does both...are there any alternatives to this IAT
plugin for FF? I want easy FF editing in TM.

Hi all,
I love a lot of things about TextMate - but I'm still
having one major problem.
How can I edit multiple files straight from an FTP
server in a single window? I use Transmit 3 - which
lets you ctrl-click a file and "edit in" whatever.
Then, when you save, it shoots the new file up to the
server. However, I'm trying to figure out how to do
this within one window - like when you're working on a
"project".
This works fine in BBEdit but in textmate it just won't work.
It's probably the last thing that's holding me back from switching over
completely...
Hi list,
I've just released a public beta of BlogMate, my free blogging
palette plug-in for TextMate. If some of you could backup your blog
databases, download a copy, try it out, and send me a letter saying
your blog didn't blow up that would be sweet.
I'm serious about the whole backup part too.

This has been discussed before, you should find a bunch of stuff on
here with a search.
I don't get the technical reasons behind it but it seems that it is
impossible to get that behavior from TextMate. The easiest way to
solve this problem is to use Interarchy (FTP program - not free
though...). It allows you to create what they call "Net Disks" which
are local mirrors that auto synch to server on change and/or regular
intervals. Since they're pretty much local files, you can create
TextMate "projects" with them. Not ideal... But it does the trick
until a better solution gets built in TextMate. Seeing how
customizable TextMate is, I would have thought one of the super smart
people on this list would have come up a "reopen current opened
documents in a project" but I guess it's not as easy as it sounds ;)

hi,
I want to share a few suggestions for subversion bundle that comes
with Textmate, I hope this is the proper place.
* Add the ability to set the ignore propset on folders directly in
menu (ctrl+shift+a).
* When viewing status (ctrl+shift+a+0), right clicking in window to
reload will present a blank page, I'm the only one?
* Add the ability to use the --force flag, this will reduce command
line editing in some cases.
* Add the ability to use svn move (svn ren) on files in project
drawer, or just make rename function svn-aware
next, for textmate
* add the possibility to directly have a terminal window opened
sticked at the bottom of textmate like project drawer.
* sorting files and directory in project drawer, directories first
instead of alphabetic order.
* set a default preference for the position of the project drawer
(left or right).
thanks for making textmate, the best text editor so far.

Hi,
this might be a very stupid question and I'm not so sure about
whether this is the right place to ask either so I hope you can
forgive me if this post is in some way inappropriate.
I'm trying to reproduce the screencast about tm_dialog on my computer
but somehow it doesn't work. Whenever I try to open a nib-file with
"tm_dialog some_nib_file.nib" my shell is stalling but nothing else
happens. I wonder what I'm doing wrong!? Are there any Variables I
should set?
I'm using /Applications/TextMate.app/Contents/PlugIns/Dialog.tmplugin/
Contents/Resources/tm_dialog (=$DIALOG)
on a core duo macbook with 10.4.8. The nib file is saved as 10.2 and
later.
Thx, Dominik.

Yes. I'm low in coding mojo, but assign me a granular task and I will
do it.

When either a scene or a bit of dialogue spans a page-break
indicators are placed in the scene and in the dialogue that tell you
the scene, or bit of dialogue, continues on the next page. It looks
like this:
INT. STORE ROOM - NIGHT
Darcy sits alone.
DARCY
I can't stand just waiting here.
(more)
(CONT'D)
-----------------Page-Break-----------------------
(CONT'D:)
DARCY (CONT'D)
Give me something, anything...
The only place this pops up in is when printing to PDF. As of now the
PDF creation is handled by PrinceXml, so prince determines where the
page-breaks should go. Because prince is deciding where the page-
breaks go prince would need to determine when it needs to place the
"continued" indicators.
I'm using Prince because it's easy to install and I can leverage the
HTML conversion I can do to create the PDF. People have suggested
that I could get much more sophesticated odcuments using LaTex but
I've found it to be a large download, a pain to install, and yet
another document language I'd have to learn. So, I'm not too
interested at this point.
But to be frank, this issue is not a priority.
Hi folks,
I am just starting to get into TM a bit (I'm considering switching
from VIM), and I noticed that the Stats for Document command is a bit
overly complicated. I just wanted to suggest the following instead:
wc | sed -e ':x' -e 's/\([0-9][0-9]*\)\([0-9][0-9][0-9]\)/\1,\2/' -e
'tx' | awk '{printf "%11.11s lines\n%11.11s words\n%11.11s bytes\n",
$1,$2,$3}'
Nice app, so far... well, except it's that a modeless editor, of
course :)

Hi All,
I've got localhosting set up and I'd like to edit a folder as user
www, but
sudo -u www mate folder_name
doesn't seem to work as expected. This could be because I don't know
the default Mac OS X www user password, I need to modify the sudoers
file, or because sudo doesn't pass privs to Textmate when called via
mate, as Allan seems to suggest here:
http://comox.textdrive.com/pipermail/textmate/2006-November/014625.html
Is this possible, or should I add it to the Wiki requests page? If it
is possible, can someone point me in the right direction?

dear list,
pardon my ignorance on this one... I have a feeling this has been
covered many times...
I'm wanting to try using TM for projects I'd usually use just Xcode
for... but I'm missing the class/method/function suggestions you get
when you are typing symbols in Xcode and press esc. does TM offer
popup suggestion menus like this? specifically for cocoa/
corefoundation/core graphics, etc?

Hi all,
I am having a problem getting started with tm_dialog. I followed the
instructions (intro_to_tm_dialog.mov --
http://macromates.com/blog/archives/2006/10/28/new-dialog-system-for-comman…
) but the first error I found was this:
> tm_dialog
/Applications/TextMate.app/Contents/SharedSupport/Support/bin/tm_dialog:
line 5: /bin/tm_dialog_v5: No such file or directory
( In this 20 seconds I learned the ctrl-R - whoa KICK BUTT!! -- but sadly
`which tm_dialog` didn't work (strange tm_dialog worked)..)
The script was easy so I just will use tm_dialog_v5, but then the
following error occurred. Upon simply creating an empty nib and attempting
to use tm_dialog with it I get the following error:
> tm_dialog_v5 ~/Desktop/test.nib
tm_dialog: you have updated the Dialog plug-in to v8 but the tm_dialog
tool is still at v5
Since the movie ended abruptly I figured someone has a working example
buried in the TM application. I dug into the SharedBundles and started
looking around hoping to find a completion to the movie - or a bunch of
people who have created some nibs. I only found 10. (Uh-oh) Doing some
digging I can't seem to find any code which calls a nib other than the
subversion example but I don't understand how that works - it doesn't
appear to actually call it (i.e It doesn't ever seem to do a tm_dialog??)
So I am left with a bunch of questions I hope you experts can help me
with.
1. How can I get tm_dialog v8 or how do I get this to work as is?
2. Can someone give me a crude example of how to call a nib from a bundle
command and use it's output?
3. When creating a nib I want to get a password from a user - how do I
obfuscate the input?
4. How can I store that password so I can use it in other functions
within the bundle?
5. There was mention of a python property list parser - does anyone know
how this works with tm_dialog (example would be great), where it is and
how to use it?
Thanks a lot from A paying customer - who just bought the book too!!

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if this is how I am supposed to commit or
if there is a bug with TextMate's subversion bundle but here goes...
If I modify a few files and want to commit all my changes in 1 commit
with 1 message there is only 1 way I've found to do so. I have to
select the top level folder (like trunk, that contains my app, public
etc directories) at which point you can use the menu or the key
shortcut Ctl+Shift+A to pop up a window and choose commit, see the
multiple file, type you message and subversion sends the changes off
to the repository... the only problem is that in order to get a pop up
dialog on the top level folder (ie trunk) you have to have some (any)
file ope in textmate. Is this normal? I have gotten used to it but
sometimes before I quit for the night I close all my windows so no
preview is open in textedit and just the file drawer is there and I go
"shoot...I should really do a commit" but I can just select the folder
and get the list...I have to have a file open.
I know it's picky...is this how everyone else is doing it???
Thanks,
-Jon

So I'm not sure how much interest this bundle will hold for a bunch
of code-jockeys on a mailing list, but I released version 3 of my
screenwriting bundle today. The bundle is all new, it's got a help
file, a preview function, a 'check for updates' function, Auto-
Complete, an 'Import from Final Draft' function that actually works,
and a lot more.
Thanks to SubtleGradiant for the Code Completion work and everyone on

hi all,
I am a longtime bbedit user but someone said I should check textmate
out. I like it so far but I have encountered some weird and
frustrating behavior while using the project file pane while editing
text files loaded through transmit's 'edit with...' over sftp:
- sometimes when files open up through transmit and then I drag them
to the project pane, they're blank. I'll repeat the same process and
then they show up fine.
- sometimes after working on a file for awhile, the filename turns
red, which I'm assuming means the link has died and I can't open them
up anymore. I can toggle back to the tab if it's still open and see
the file, but it won't save any changes at that point. This is the
most frustrating because I have set up 100+ html/php/js/css files and
then they break.
Anyone have similar problems?
I'm running 10.4.8 on an intel macbook.
thanks!
Alan

Not sure who to address this to, but I have a few suggestions about
how the MTASC compile works in the ActionScript bundle. The new MTASC
addition is really great, way better than the one I built for myself,
but I do have a few suggestions to make.
The mtasc.yaml support file should allow for a tad bit more flexibility:
- The option to not use XTrace, a lot of Mac Flash developers use
Console and the debug Flash player for this. Right now it seems if no
trace is defined it uses XTrace; so there is no way to fall back on
the Flash default. Also removing the XTrace class paths if not using
them.
- The option to easily add additional MTASC arguments in the yaml; for
example '- strict'.
- The option to NOT include the 'std' and the 'std8' classes.
- '- keep' should not be called by default if a SWF is present. This
could cause some classes to be present two times if also compiled with
MTASC. I would suggest allowing the user to add this command in the
additional MTASC arguments variable I mentioned above.
My apologizes if there is currently a way to do any of the above
without editing the 'build_with_mtasc.rb'. I would be glad to make the
changes myself...
Thanks for your time.
best,
Aaron Clinger

This is an updated version of the Yahoo bundle, renamed and packaged
to include the two Wikipedia commands revised to use link builder
templates. I revised the templates one more time to allow for
insertion as snippets with just the title being set up for immediate
editing. I changed all of the bundled commands to Insert as Snippet.
I included the simplest version of my modified google lucky linking
command that grabs the title of the retrieved link, I can't remember
how you guys felt about that, so do what you will with it.
I also modified the Yahoo commands to use the DIALOG environment
variable. I've been using them lately and I have to admit, they're
slicker than I thought they'd be.
Also...
My most useful (to me) blog linking commands require my related post
xmlrpc Wordpress plugin, but if there's any interest, they allow for
searching of your posts by selected text or input box, linking
selected text to related posts on your blog, etc. Those commands
haven't been updated for the link builder yet, but will be if it's
added to the default distro.

Forgive this really bone-headed question, but when I go to save a
collection of files as a project -- and I have created them within
the project using CMD + Shift + N -- both a project file is saved as
well as the individual files. In other words, the individual files
appear in the finder. Now, if the groupings were also being saved as
folders/directories, it might be okay -- this is what happens when
drags a collection of folders and files to Textmate. I thought the
save as project feature produced a package of some kind? I don't see
a preference I could have changed, so I'm wondering what's going on.
Hey everyperson, I just noticed that the change Allan made isn't quite
accurate to the syntax of =begin and =end. Ruby only checks that the
start of the line matches; any characters after the 'n' in =begin are
considered part of the embedded document, and anything after =end is
considered Ruby code. Thus, it should be "^=begin" and "^=end".
Thanks,
Harrison

Hi
As some developer ;) told me i can improve the BB-Bundle by myself. I have
done that!
How can i contribute now?
The way it is mentioned on this page:
http://macromates.com/wiki/Bundles/HowToContribute
doesnt work.
When i am svn co it copies me the Bundle to the Library but when i
double-click it TextMate opens with the Project View and in the sidebar i
have the folders "Snippets" "Commands" and so on o_O
What's wrong there?
Here are my improvements (so far):
1. Wrap selection as Link vBulleting & phpBB - takes the adress from the
pasteboard and places it where it should be. (Taken from the HTML or
Markdown Bundle don't know exactly anymore)
2. Wrap selection as Code Block
3. Wrap selection as Quote - takes the whole text from pasteboard and
inserts it. It asks to enter the quoted Username, too.
4. Indent > - lets you make an indented text (don't know if that works in
phpBB - not tested yet)
5. Strikout - erm strikes the text out
TODO:
1. Outdent < - i haven't figured out yet how to find last occurence of
[INDENT] within some indents, delete it, let the text untouched and delete
the next [/INDENT]. I was thinking about using some kind of regular
expression, but since a i didn't know of RegEx before 3 weeks or so i am
very new to this. ;)
2. Integrate "strikeout" to the bundle language.
Thanks!

I just gave TextMate a try...
I'm sorry to say it was simply awful, which brings me up against the
troubling paradox of TextMate's growing popularity. This is truly a
big conundrum for me, one that I'd love to figure out...
The first thing I learn about working with TextMate is that to open a
file I need to use a GUI. This is a bad start. I, and all other
programmers I know, hate to use the mouse while coding, so I must
conclude that TM's developers just do not know their target market. A
very bad sign indeed. (Yes, I know that one can navigate a GUI with
the keyboard, but it is awkward at best, not the kind of action I want
to perform often.)
Fine, let's use the mouse. I open an HTML file and a JavaScript file.
Now I have TWO windows open. Good grief... Let's see, in my typical
coding session I work on at least a dozen buffers at any one time. So
I suppose that, if I were using TextMate as my text editor, I'd have
to wade through at least a dozen windows cluttering my desktop...
Strike 2.
In the first 60 seconds or so, TextMate has already managed to look
pretty darn awful to me, but I continue on the optimistic assumption
that all the flaws I have found so far (which are deal breakers AFAIC)
can be "customized away". (If so my only remaining misgiving would be
regarding the supreme lack of customer awareness responsible for not
having these hypothetical customizations as standard-out-of-the-box in
the first place.)
But what followed is simply inexcusable.
I visit the JavaScript file and start using F1 to fold blocks of code.
The third or fourth one of these F1s results in a beep (and no
folding of the block), but no error message is visible anywhere, nor
is any other indication of what TextMate is having a problem with.
Signalling an error without telling the user what the error is is an
example ATROCIOUS software design. Revoke the developers' licenses,
and put them all in jail for software engineering malpractice...
Seriously now, by this point I was already truly astonished that I
ever even heard of TextMate to begin with.
After scanning the menus and the preferences and finding no clue on
why the beep, I decide to try TextMate Help under the Help menu. I
search for "beep" and get nothing; then I search for "error", and get
a few hits. When I visit one of them, there's a lot of stuff on the
page, nothing obviously devoted to errors, so I hit Cmd-F to search
for the word "error", and all I get is yet another beep. The same
thing happens when I visit other pages in the original results list.
What's going on here? Things have been bad enough so far that I'm
suspecting the unthinkable, I'm suspecting that maybe TextMate's HELP
pages are not accessible to Cmd-F. To test this hypothesis, I use
Cmd-F to search for a word that I can clearly see on the page in front
of me. Again, I get a beep. Whaddya know?
Please someone tell me how can it be that software like this is not
only for sale, but actually SELLING??? What did I miss?

Ok,
I found the CMPluginContext bug, and a way to reproduce it.
in your project, have a few items already added, and ready to be
commited. Have a new item in your tree. Bring up the commit
window. Click add next to that file, and click the checkbox, type
your message in and hit enter. The commit will fail.

I apologize for starting a new thread; my mailing list mail is
cleared pretty quickly. This is a continuation of a previous thread:
http://comox.textdrive.com/pipermail/textmate/2007-March/017974.html
In any case, I have managed to get a screenshot of the issue taking
place with normal font settings (i.e. no italicization). Screenshot
(sorry for the nasty code :-D): http://img144.imageshack.us/
img144/5830/picture6eu8.png . This is actually three separate
screenshots composed. On the left is TM behaving normally with AA
off, the center is normal AA on behavior, and on the right is the
issue taking place.
Deleting the font cache + restart seemed to fix it, but I haven't
experimented enough to verify that that is what is actually fixing it.
Thanks,
Andy K.
Hi Foks,
Not sure if this goes to you all or not but Pymate is using the
wrong version of python when it runs my script. Basically I have a script
which looks like this
#!/usr/bin/env python
print "Hi"
It fires python version 2.3.5.
If I open a shell and type /usr/bin/env python it brings up the version I
want.
I have set TM_PYTHON to point to the version I want but still no luck. Any
ideas?

Hello everyone;
Please see the attached tmCommand for a little doodad which reads
a PHP script for private variables and generates getters and setters.
Cheers,
JC.
Hi everybody.
a while ago is followed this article:
http://encytemedia.com/blog/articles/2006/11/3/increasing-
productivity-with-texmate-s-new-tm_dialog
and everything worked well.
but after a while, when inserting an image from the menu generated by
the command it would return that i have a tm_dialog conflict.
at the time i removed the command as i was afraid to do something bad
to my text mate when asked to checkout the dialog.tmplugin
After a while a removed the dialog.tmplugin from my application
support folder.
and i forgot about it.
i just tried to recreate the command but when i use it it return this
/tmp/temp_textmate.n4JLBy:7:in `require': No such file to load -- /
Users/zapata/Library/Application Support/TextMate/Support/lib/plist
(LoadError)
from /tmp/temp_textmate.n4JLBy:7
and i do not have a plist file in my lib folder indeed.
any idea how to fix this or if removing the dialog.tmplugin frommy
application support was a bad idea?
i tried to copy the one from the application content back into the
folder but it doesn't change anything.
cheers people from the world.
other wise i'm as well trying to set up django on my mac osx 10.4.8
but it does/nt do anything when i follow the instruction there :
http://www.djangoproject.com/documentation/install/
tar xzvf Django-0.95.tar.gz
cd Django-0.95
sudo python setup.py install
it keep returning an error message and abort the installation, even
with the firewall off

Hi,
I rewrote my Command 'Insert File/Path Name + AutoCorrect'.
Key: CTRL+TAB
Scope: none
BTW I use this Command very often to open a file without a mouse or
GUI. Just type:
'mate ' and invoke this Command, and finally press CTRL+R.
To illustrate that Command I did a screencast (without sound because
my mic is out of order, but there are written comments)
http://www.bibiko.de/TM_InsertFilePathNames.mov (ca. 5.7MB)
Comments are welcome!
Best,
Hans
Some features:
- simulates the TAB behaviour on a console with pull down menu,
auto correction by looking backwards for a vaild begin of a path/
file name,
and supports relative path names using TM_DIRECTORY
- it tries to complete that file name according to the file name
before the caret's position
(i.e.: It is possible to use this command not only at the end of
the line but also at the end of a
given path within the line and even inside a given path to
change it.)
- to auto-complete files beginning with a dot type:
e.g.: '~/.p' to look for dot files beginning with p
'~/.+' to list all dot files in the home directory
- if TM_BUNDLE_SUPPORT, TM_SUPPORT_PATH, etc. occures in a line it
will use this directory as start point
Hints:
The path ./ will be substitue with $TM_DIRECTORY!
../ is also supported for relative paths using $TM_DIRECTORY as root!
You can use wildcards. e.g. ~/Pictures/.*jpg (for all jpg files)
[case sensitive!]
Symlinks are supported but not for changing a given path name.
You can use TAB to jump to the end of the line, or if there is a
space in front of the
inserted path name you can jump to that space to delete or to
insert a /.
(Because this command inserts the text as snippet)
Am I missing something or does the 'Revert' option from the subversion
bundle menu (ctrl-shift-A) doesn't display a confirmation dialog? I
managed to crash TextMate as soon as I accidentally pressed that (it's
right next to Update!!!) so I only lost my local changes in 2 of the 15
files I was working on... But honestly... no confirmation dialog? What's
up with that?
(btw, I still think TextMate kicks *ss, don't get me wrong :)
Wow...can't believe I missed that one. I knew about Cmd + T I hadn't
really used it yet because I am just starting work in TextMate and am
working in a project called test and haven't really named my files
something super great yet (and can't remember their names) so clicking
was more efficient for this project but thank you for pointing out the
obvious! So many of the great features are so subtle :-)
Thanks,
-Jon
A little command that's especially useful for writing emails.
It takes a highlighted URI and uses murl.info to shorten it to
something more like:
http://murl.info/14511
Very tinyurl but a little more underground ;-). Plus I couldn't get
tinyurl to do this...
It will accept a uri with or without a protocol (http(s)) and will
accept just about any amount of garbage on the end. It does a pretty
decent job of recognizing if what you have selected is actually a uri
or not.

Hi list,
generally, I use textmate to write source code for various languages
and systems. Everything works nicely.
Textmate is set to use ISO-Latin1.
From time to time, I need to copy text fragments from Word oder PDF
documents
to PHP scripts. As soon save the file with the copied text, the
encoding of textmate
document suddenly changes. All diacritical characters get converted
to funny
chars. All in all, the resulting PHP isn't any longer useable.
It took me some time to exactly figure out the reasons. But, I failed
to solve it.
Does someone has an idea regarding this?
BTW: If I try this using Eclipse, the IDE reports a problem saving
the file, since
the encoding changed. I have to start windows and copy the Word text
fragments -
since Eclipse on Windows works just fine.
An ideas?
Kind regards,
Stefan
TextMate list,
how can I command TextMate to create a new untitled document from a
separate process? Basically, I want textmate to create a new window
(titled 'untitled n', that does not have a file path associated with
it yet.
Can you do this somehow thru the mate command line command? typing
just 'mate' seems to activate textmate.app, but it doesn't guarantee
that a new window will be opened (which is good). typing 'mate
new' (replace new with whatever title you want for your doc) creates
a new file with a path of /new. I would like to create a new file
that does not have any path info yet. any ideas?

Howdy folks!
Is it possible to tell TextMate not to search specific folders or files
when searching a project for a particular string? In BBEdit, I could
establish a list of file extensions or folders to skip when performing a
multi-file search. Something similar in TextMate?
Charley
I know ctl+tab right now switches focus between the text and the
sidebar, which I think is very useful and I don't think that feature
should go away, I just really would like a way to switch between the
most recently edited file and the one I'm currently working on...
I realize that I could order my tabs so that I could use apple +
option and left or right, but I would love not to have to care what
order my tabs are in to be able to switch between the 2 most recently
edited files. Visual Studio has this feature as I mentioned in the
subject through the ctl+tab feature. I use quite frequently.
Any possibility we could see this implemented?
Thanks,
-Jon
