No, I believe that this won't be practical based on the way that it is implemented.

This would have been awesome.
rmate is < 200 lines of Ruby code, I don't think it would be incredibly difficult for someone to adjust it to simulate the editing of directories if they had the time and desire. You can of course do 'rmate *' to open each file in a directory.
I found that use
to mount a server directory to local works just fine.
Then rmate is just used for edit temp single file.

Last thing I want to do is pipe shared hosting directly into my machine, lol. For vps, maybe, or for my own server in my laundry room... But not your average run of the mill shared hosting account.
