Actually, I used it to mount several servers of my company for developing or testing in LAN.

rmate is < 200 lines of Ruby code, I don't think it would be incredibly difficult for someone to adjust it to simulate the editing of directories if they had the time and desire.  You can of course do 'rmate *' to open each file in a directory.
