I found that use 

http://macfusionapp.org/

to mount a server directory to local works just fine.

Then rmate is just used for edit temp single file.

rmate is < 200 lines of Ruby code, I don't think it would be incredibly difficult for someone to adjust it to simulate the editing of directories if they had the time and desire.  You can of course do 'rmate *' to open each file in a directory.
