Hey everybody
I've been a TM user since the very early days. I had a license for TM1, and I kept using TM2 through all these years while many fellow devs switched to fancy coding IDEs.
I love the simplicity of TM2, and it does just what I want it to do, nothing more.
But since a while, I experience that TM2 has some scrolling issues. When I switch between the tabs (opened text files), the scrolling jumps quite unpredictably. I always have to move the cursor (arrow key), so the current line is in the viewport again. This is annoying, and for the first time in my life I'm tempted to abandon TM2 and move to some other simple editor.
Can anyone tell me whether there is a way to fix this? Or that it will be fixed soon?
Thanks a log Josua
This is the major issue I keep complaining about. Basically I now have a habit of just hammering on Command-J after any kind of navigation, to bring back the selection into view. m.

Yep, same here, annoying and seemingly unpredictable jumps when changing tabs (and some other fringe cases)… S.

I noticed scrolling issues for what seems years. Most irritating has been TM won’t scroll to the end of the page, but I’ve never gotten systematic about trying to sort it out. I just tried with a 200 line file on an M1 MBP. On first opening a file (from File Browser or TM relaunch), feels like TM is trying to find out where the end of the file is or read ahead or something like that. An unsteadiness. (Some reports of issues with early Monterey, but I’m at 12.1). And scrolling still seems to stop before the end of the page and then if you scroll again, you can get to the bottom. Just relaunched again, and scrolling is jerky and stopped two lines before the bottom.
Somewhat oddly, I quit TM at the end of the page. On relaunch the top is at line 22. (This happened over several relaunches.)
All the above is for two finger scrolling. I tried a 12k line file and scrolled by dragging the scroll bar button and it scrolled to the bottom without hesitation. I quit and relaunched and that file was at line 0, Dragged scroll bar to bottom in less than a second (half?) and ended up at the end of the file. Manually tabbed to the 200 line file and was six lines from the bottom.
I don’t know if any of this helps, but confirms somewhat erratic behavior. I probably use TM less than an hour a day. Not ready to switch. Since there was some much chatter about MS Code I had tried it a bit and decided it wasn’t worth it for my limited use. A few advantages for me, but not worth relearning. The main thing I liked was that for Rails html.erb the folding was much easier to read.

Me again. Just tried a 200k line file. On M1MBP. Scrolls to the end smoothly. On reopening opens 10 numbered lines before the end (each line takes about six lines in the window). Consistently—at least three times in a row. Same place on relaunch.
PS. Takes about five seconds to open the file.

It is unpredictable. I get a weird scrunching of lines sometimes when I scroll down fast with a trackpad or mouse, then the lines readjust, sometimes they get “stuck” before they right themselves after some additional scroll back and forth. Usually happens on files that have a few hundred lines in them.
I’m using TM way less now because I need the power of an IDE for python. It’s too slow coding that stuff by hand and not having a language server with a linter running.
I still use TM regularly for its powerful search though and for typing plain txt for notes. I’ll continue to use it just because it lets me quickly search all the text of my project folder and jump to those lines to make fast changes. The scrolling bug is annoying though.

Sublime is just so un-Mac. If I wanted to be un-Mac I'd still be running Linux. (shudder)
I run VS Code for school because it's what the instructor uses and I could easily talk to MSSQL with it. But the idea of a text editor coded in JS makes my skin crawl.
BBEdit is and continues to be my other go-to.
Already left Sublime again, as it doesn't offer nice keyboard shortcuts for creating/editing/deleting files in the file tree.
VSCode does the job perfectly!

Already left Sublime again, as it doesn't offer nice keyboard shortcuts for creating/editing/deleting files in the file tree.
Just tested it using a LaTeX document I’m toying around with these days. I even found no way to typeset it. Cmd-B (Build) does nothing. Cmd-R does some search. How?
VSCode does the job perfectly!
VS is MicroSh*t. Won’t infect my machines.

Sublime is just so un-Mac. If I wanted to be un-Mac I'd still be running Linux. (shudder)
I run VS Code for school because it's what the instructor uses and I could easily talk to MSSQL with it. But the idea of a text editor coded in JS makes my skin crawl.
Also this.

When using CMD-R on a LaTeX file on Monterey 12.1 (amr64) I this this warning message
"TextMate" needs to be updated This app will not work with future versions of macOS and needs to be updated to improve compatibility. Contact the developer for more information.
I click on the "Learn More..." button and am transferred to
https://www.python.org/doc/sunset-python-2/
Do I need to file an issue?

Hi el,
the problem is that the LaTeX bundle uses the (very old) Python version that ships with macOS. The “good” news is that this issue will be “fixed” in a future macOS update that probably will not include Python at all. This update of the scripting language support was part of the [release notes][] for macOS 10.15 (see section “Scripting Language Runtimes”):
[release notes]: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-catalina...
Anyway, in the future we probably need to install Python and Perl to use some of the commands of the LaTeX bundle. One problem I see is that everybody might use slightly different versions of these runtimes and debugging might get harder. Other options are to port the commands to the (very old) version of Ruby that is included in TextMate or include Python and Perl runtimes in TextMate. For now I would just ignore the warning, though it is very likely that some parts of the bundle will not work in a future version of the OS, as it stands now.
Kind regards, René

René,
thanks.
I wonder if one could not test for the minimum versions of Perl, Python, Ruby or whatever in a "unified" way so if a bundle is missing something it can notify what the user needs to do, install it.
But then I am just a satisfied user with little if any understanding of the inner workings.
greetings, el

Can anyone tell me whether there is a way to fix this? Or that it will be fixed soon?
This has come up a few times. Allan’s latest comment on the issue said it will be fixed with an overhaul of the layout engine, but that was in 2018.
For now, as far as I know, your options are to disable Soft Wrap or get used to hitting ⌃L or ⌘J.
