I suspect you've forgotten a `}', causing me to apply this control sequence to too much text. How can we recover? My plan is to forget the whole thing and hope for the best.

Hmm... that does not follow any of the conventions for an error message. Can you check the log file again and see if there is a line before the runaway argument that begins with a ! or is formatted in a way that includes the file and line number?
