Yes, it's the same thing.
(maybe just a different background color in the gutter, so it doesn't have to take up more space).
I'm open to alternatives, and that sounds like a decent one to me.

I like this feature as well. It makes it easier to orient oneself in large blocks of markup.

Since it's probably somewhat minor (implementation-vise), it's now added to an internal to-do for upcomming bug-fix/minor releases (1.0.1 and so on).
