This week I installed Textmate 2.0 beta, and I am still learning a lot. One of the things I found myself wishing for was the ability to change some features of the themes I found most to my liking. Google got me to pages such as this (https://manual.macromates.com/en/themes https://manual.macromates.com/en/themes), referencing "Preferences → Fonts & Colors”, which I can’t find in Textmate; perhaps the manual does not apply to the version I installed?
Is there any (GUI-based much preferred) way of building a theme (modifying an existing one) in my installation? If not, should I perhaps uninstall Textmate and install an earlier version? If so, which?

That link applies to TextMate 1.

To change a theme in TextMate 2 you can open the Bundle Editor (Bundles -> Edit Bundles…) then navigate to the Themes bundle in the left tree, click Themes in the second column, pick the theme you would like to edit in the third column and edit the theme in the bottom view, save with File -> Save. Unfortunately there’s no GUI, it’s just a plist file.

The question I have remaining is as follows. Suppose that I want to keep the original version of the theme that I am modifying, as well as the new one that I am creating by editing the original one. How do I do that? Differently put, how do I save a given theme as a new one, which I can proceed to edit at will?

Unfortunately there’s no GUI, it’s just a plist file.
I think that simplest is to create a new theme and copy-paste the content of the theme you would like to edit. In the Bundle Editor, click File -> New -> Theme -> Create. Note that copying the file on disk is not always a good idea because each bundle item has a UUID that needs to be unique. This is automatically generated when a new item is created.
