Recently, when I try to open TextMate, TextEdit opens up instead. I cannot figure out how to launch TextMate. I think this started happening around the time I upgraded to Lion, but I am not sure if there is any connection.
I rebooted one time and was about to launch TextMate, but now even if I reboot it still brings up TextEdit.
Thanks for your help,
- Tad
Are you saying that you double-click on the TextMate icon in your Applications folder and TextEdit opens instead? I've never heard that one.
If you're saying that you double-click on a text FILE and TE opens it instead of TM, that's understandable and easy to fix. Click on one such text file in your Finder, and choose Get Info (Command-I). In the inspector panel, look for the Open With section, and choose TM. Then click the Open all documents with this application (not the actual words, something like that) and confirm that you really mean it. Should fix the problem permanently (or until the next major sun-spot event...).

Walter,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, believe it or not, when I click the TextMate icon in the Dock TextEdit opens up instead of TextMate. I checked my default for text files and it is set to Smultron.
I've been a Mac user for about 3 years now, but something like this is still magic for me. I don't know how to 'open up the hood' and edit what happens when a Dock icon is clicked. Also, as further confirmation, I typed 'mate' in the Console and TextEdit opened up that way too.

try removing it from the dock and adding it back.
does this happen as well when opening TM from the applications folder?

interesting, before giving Phil's solution a try, I'd suggest deleting text mate app and its preferences files(back up the pref files so you don't lose any customizations) to see if that fixes it.
since I've upgraded to lion, its been nothing but trouble for me(outside of text mate issues, just issues in general)

Before adding this to my profile I entered these 2 on the command line, but I did not see a difference. Based on the first one I decided to try '/Applications/TextMate.app/Contents/MacOS/TextMate', and that brought up TextEdit too!

Could you just look in your Applications folder (not the Dock) and find the TextMate icon there (and see if there's more than one, that would be odd). Double-click that icon.
Also, try this:
ls -l /Applications | grep TextMate | grep -v grep
From what you've said, it sounds very much like TextMate.app has been replaced by a symlink or hard link to TextEdit.app.
Have you done any TimeMachine restores?

ls -l /Applications | grep TextMate | grep -v grep
From what you've said, it sounds very much like TextMate.app has been replaced by a symlink or hard link to TextEdit.app.
Have you done any TimeMachine restores?

Walter,
Thanks for the reply.

I have it at 40.8 MB as well - same as Walters. Latest 1.5.1 version.

Hmm, it's showing 31MB in Finder.

TextMate.app here is 40.8MB according to Finder. (in Snow Leopard) Try looking at it in Finder, in columns view, and see what the size listing is there when you have the Preview triangle flipped down in the last column.

Ed,
Here is the information from the directory listing.
11675308 Nov 18 2010 TextMate
Looks like 11MB, which is odd since I would expect it to be larger than TextEdit.

Check the size Tad. Is it around 16.3 MB. In which case it really is TextEdit with the TextMate icon.

I've checked the Applications folder and executed the command below.
Only one instance of TextMate in both instances.
I know, it does seem like TextMate has been replaced somehow.

Could you just look in your Applications folder (not the Dock) and find the TextMate icon there (and see if there's more than one, that would be odd). Double-click that icon.
Also, try this:
ls -l /Applications | grep TextMate | grep -v grep
