http:wiki.macromates.com/FAQ/TextMate2: Q: Will TM2 be a free upgrade? Yes. Except for users who got TM1 as part of the MacHeist package. The MacHeist TM1 license will require an upgrade fee in order to upgrade to TM2. (source).
So, there will be no TextMate 2 for a long, long, long time. Not until there is a serious competitor. The talk has been on since before Mac OS X 10.5, but... It's a pity, but it's very understandable. One has got to live of something.
Regards, /Peder
Please, lets not start this again. Be happy with what you have, and dream of TM2 at night, but for the love of god, stop complaining in the mean time.

Yes . . . please . . . when Allan gets the Alpha done he gets it done.
Besides I have to ask the question. If TextMate is so good (which it is) why is everyone so impatient for TM2? Yes it will probably be better then TM1 and more scalable, but TM1 is great as is.
If anything the bigger question would be for the windows users wondering when TM is going to be coming to there platform? Besides E-text Editor which works pretty good. But I was a little put out when they wanted to charge for a product that was still in Beta.

it will be a joyous day when tm2 comes out, but i think it's more fun to have no idea when it's coming and be surprised when it does. it'll definitely be the best day of my coding life when it's out.
besides, i don't see why Allan would wait for competition, to work on tm2 more, apple doesn't wait for microsoft to catch up before making a new release.
it kind of blows my mind that I still have little things to learn about TM1 though, considering how long it's been out. i guess that's the mark of great software. :)

Yes, agreed on all counts. Especially the discovering of new thing in TM1. I have read the Pragmatic book, have had TM1 for about 18 months, and still I keep finding new things. If you think about, the richnes and depth of TM1, well . . . frankly . . . I'm amazed that Allan pulled all this together by himself.

Well, just to stir the pot a bit: TM is great -- I've hardly opened up XEmacs in the last couple of years. But there are a couple of important missing bits of functionality that have at least been hinted at for TM2 that, in fact, do make me mutter under my breath every time I encounter them (for me, those are the lack of smarter undo and multiple viewing panes in a single window). I am not complaining (well, I guess I am, a little), but, as a paying customer, I don't think there's anything wrong with prodding Allan every so often (as long as it is done with good humor and the usual well-deserved praise for the work done so far!).
Yours,
Andrew

My guess is that TextMate will come to Windows just as soon as Apple makes it possible to run any old app under Windows, and Windows comes pre-installed with functional versions of bash, tcsh, PHP, Python, Ruby, Perl, etc.
There was a brief period where "Cocoa" apps were running under Solaris and Windows (before they could even run on a Mac), so never say never. Of course, it [wasn't called Cocoa][1] then, but you know I mean.
As for TM2, I'm looking forward to it, but mostly out of curiosity because it doesn't seem like there's *that* much room for improvement.

Because TextMate isn't that great. It being a good (arguably the best) OS X programmers editor doesn't mean it's great. SlickEdit, if it was native Cocoa instead of X, would be much, much better.
So those of use waiting for a version 2 hope that the many issues, both visual and functional, with finally be fixed. Then maybe it'll be a great editor.
just wondering, what does slickedit's *editor* have that textmate doesn't? I played around with it for a trial period and eventually decided to stick with textmate, because i found all the same editor features and a much nicer native interface (and i'm pretty intolerant when it comes to non-native interfaces so it was worth losing the ide features).

I like that little Swiss Army Knife thing. Or Leatherman, if you like. A little gadget here and there which is all available.
Plus there was/is always someone out there, to help you, if you needed help.
In the End, nothing is really perfect for anyone's taste, but I still find it impressive.
