All, I had to reinstall textmate in order to get rid of this problem. The response to echo $DIALOG below was nothing. And thus it was the only solution available to me.
All is now sweetness and light.

Looking at the version, it seems to be "tm_dialog r6545 (Feb 12 2007) ", or possibly "tm_dialog r6021 (2006-11-16)" if I run tm_dialog or tm_dialog_v5 in Textmate (don't know whether I'm supposed to have two of these things installed?)
How can I fix this problem?
I changed the system slightly, trying to remedy the problems with different versions ;)
In TextMate, enter: echo $DIALOG and press ⌃R — this will give you the path to the tm_dialog binary that you should be able to call from Terminal.
