I just learned from the download page that TM 2 is intended only for Lion and later. Will this remain the case? I'm on a late 2006 Mac Pro which cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion, so does that mean I'm stuck with the 1.5.11 version. That still works well, except for having no decent print options.

I'm afraid so. However there is a 10.6 fork of TM2 (see here: https://github.com/nanoant/textmate), but it looks like it hasn't been touched for about 9 months (implementing replacements for 10.7 API in 10.6 isn't going to be much fun!!).
As for print options, I'm afraid that very little printing functionality has been implemented in the TM2 alpha to date anyway... That said, I'd encourage you to at least download the 10.6 fork and have a play with it. I've been using the alpha since it was first released, and I couldnt' switch back to TM1.0 now...

Can't you upgrade to Lion, if you can get it? Perhaps buy it on a USB stick if still available. I'm running Lion on my late 2006 MacBook.
That is a pity. I also have Snow Leopard and I'm not looking to "upgrade" to Mountain Lion unless I manage to get a new computer; even then, I might not.

Yes, and once 10.9 is officially released, there is a good chance the requirements will be 10.8 and newer.
Each OS update introduce new and better API plus bug fixes. Not being able to take advantage of the new API or having to provide workarounds for older OS versions (and test on these) affects productivity negatively.
That still works well, except for having no decent print options.
I assume you’re aware of http://wiki.macromates.com/HowTo/PrintWithColors — for now, 2.0 hasn’t improved upon printing (on the contrary), it still remains an unchecked item on my to-do list ;)
