Hello,
I upgraded last week TextMate to the latest version (1.b12) which was the first with the new syntax coloring engine I tried. And I really have speed problems with it. When I scroll down, it may take 2-3 seconds before updating the text display, which is really painful. My computer is a 800 MHz iBook G4 with 640 MB of RAM. Yes, it's not top notch but I think TextMate should be able to work at a decent speed. I'm pretty sure the previous version did not have this problem. Does anyone else has any speed problem with the latest beta ?
Cheers, Vincent Isambart
scrolling down is no problem for me, but woe if i have to type off the right hand edge (and i usually do, cos i detest word wrap)... it really chugs.

Same here on a Powerbook 1.33GHz, 1.5GB RAM + Tiger :(
Could all three of you please provide us with some information about what Syntax you are using (is it the same in all ?) Are you using old bundles etc etc.
My experience with 1.1b12 is that it renders pages really really fast compared to before, so you need to give Allan some more info so he (or we) can help you.
Kind regards,
Mats

i'm on a 1.5ghz g4 Powerbook 1gb ram.

This is a rendering speed problem I also nagged Allan about, as I experience it a good deal myself on my 1GHz G4. Even in plain text mode it can be seen, although it's not to bad in that situation. Apparently Allan might have found a solution to it though :-).

OK, Sam, I'm one of the guys that has been working on those syntaxes, so please do the following for me:
1. Open up the PHP.tmbundle/Syntaxes/PHP.plist file (DO NOT open in Bundle Editor) and look for this:
/* BEGIN FUNCTION COMMENTING OUT, (just make a space between the * and the / to the right ) */
follow the instructions in that little comment: make */ into * /
2. Restart TM and test again. Is it working faster now ?
If it is, then that's a known problem due to all the bleeding 3600+ function in PHP.
IF NOT
1. Select a document that is particularly slow and grab a complete screenshot of it (full screen).
2. Add the document and screenshot in a .zip file and please send it to me off-list. I will then try to work out what's wrong with it.
Please also note that there are some speed issues in TM with very long lines of code, so IF you write long lines of code **Split them up** ;) Allan is working on it, so please don't bug him :)
Kind regards,
Mats

I've noticed that the speed problem is most noticable when another app is abusing the CPU (well duh) :) For example, when some Flash advertisement is eating the CPU in Safari it seems TextMate does not get much CPU time to do it's rendering. Perhaps it is because the rendering happens in a thread with a lower priority than Flash.
The result is that the entire system seems fast, while TextMate seems to perform slowly.

There does seem to be some speed issues still -- though it's not a parsing issue but seems to be related to actual text rendering (fast text rendering on OS X is really a black art, mostly on low-end systems though).
Unfortunatly (sort of) I don't have the problem on my own system, which makes it difficult to really examine what's to blame, but from emailing test versions to less fortunate users I sort of have it narrowed down.
After my desktop crapped the bed, I was trying to play catch up w/ my laptop ...
TM was *really* having a difficult time keeping up ...
lombard g3/333 MHz 384 MBs of Ram
...
:P
... all I'm saying, is that I'm just saying, is all ...
... but if you want to try and speed TM up to work on that type of machine, I'll be glad to offer my testing services ;-)
even more OT:
The worst part about the whole desktop crapping out on me was that it wasn't my desktop at all, but for some reason something really went south and it was actually the fact that my ADC display (a formac, not an apple one) was plugged in ... I took the thing to the apple store (A WAYS AWAY) ... and it (the cpu) actually worked (after a reset of the 'power management unit' on the motherboard) ... and using an apple monitor ...
I only realized it was my monitor that was the culprit because I brought the machine back home, set it all up and it wouldn't start up w/ the monitor in there ... I still can't believe it's the monitor, I mean .. what are the chances of that ..
so .. good news: my mac is ok, bad news: the display crapped, bad news: I didn't realize it sooner cuz I was really sucking on fumes trying to program on the lombard and it would have been nice to have the extra horsepower from the desktop, bad news: apple care (obviously) won't cover my display, so the fact that it was a bit cheaper (initially) to purchase that one is all but lost ... (take any morals you like away from this story)
good news: .. my laptop is just about 6 years old and it _still_ comes through in a pinch ...
has that ever happened to anyone else (the whole monitor fiasco thing)?
Sharing is caring ...
