No offense to Torsten, but I really miss the old icon : ) Oh well. The new one is nice, just more formal. -- Best regards, Lang Riley
yes, I too feel a sad sentimental about seeing the old icon gone, and a bit sad that the purple man seems to be closely related to the green family in the subethaedit icon :(
Ah well, I think I've said before on this list that the icon isn't what makes textmate what it is, so I guess I'll have to stand by that now..

Agreed.
Why exactly is that sad? As long as it isn't a rip-off, I think it's just paying tribute to another innovative text editor for OS X -- unlike BareBones [1] I do know about the existence of such :)

I have no idea what he's talking about, but TextWrangler is by no means raising any bar.

Yeah, that's gotta be one of the most ridiculous comments I heard in some time. His arrogance is much higher than his product quality can back, though.

in-fact the idea while making this icon was (like written here: http://one.textdrive.com/pipermail/textmate/2004-December/001863.html ) to let it look a bit like subethaedits icon.
i think there are much icons that look like textedit (all with-shipped os-x editors) and it had to look a bit different but imo it had to show some kind of 'mate' and some papers and a pen also had to be there because of 'text' and its an editor.
than there was the suggested purple color (which was imo a good idea) and this was the first thing looking a bit acceptable in this color i was able to paint. i also played around a bit with some eyes or eye-glasses but it didn't look very well (some are shown in this gif: http://members.lycos.co.uk/staff/tm/icon_progress.gif ) so this is the reason why it looks like it looks. if you have some ideas how to improve it (other than restarting from beginning because this costs time, much of time :) ) please send it .. i will try it out if i find the time.
I kinda like the little purple guy. Nice shading and nice look, signalling text-editor quite strongly. It might look a bit messy in 16x16, but SEE's is actually even worse in that size. I suppose a special icon could be drawn for that size to make it look better.

Actually, the nice thing about Torsten's icon is that the 16x16 representation is surprisingly sharp. It's obvious that some time was spent on it.
I actually prefer the aesthetic of Jon R.'s flavored icons, though they don't look as good at 16x16.
