Hi All,
There are quite a few blog experienced folks here so I hope you excuse the OTness:
Recently Wordpress has been buffing me: Security issues requiring immediate updates, too much manual labor for updates (especially if you maintain multiple blogs for multiple users on your linux server), upsurge of spam that can't even be stopped by disabling comments...
Are there alternatives that address the above issues?
Thanks
Gerd

My experience differs. I used a lot of different blog engines/CMS and I'm now back to WP. It's the easier to maintain and most versatile system, IMHO.
- There has been _one_ major security breach recently, AFAIK. - Updates have always been easy for me compared to other systems. - I'm happy with the Askimet efficiency for spam.
I understand your experience has been different, but I don't think you'll find a perfect replacement.
I just wish there was a system as good and written in ruby...

I just switched off MovableType for 5 years to WP for exactly the opposite reasons. :)
The only thing I want to change is where my wp-content folder is, so I can upgrade a little easier.
MT is a royal pain to configure and edit themes compared to php and word press.

Have you looked at Mephisto?

If you don't mind paying money the personal version of ExpressionEngine would solve your issues. You can run multiple blogs/ domains off of one install (license). So updates would only be a one time job. Further more their record on the security issues front is pretty dang good. Thats not even touching the flexibility of the template system. I've used it for a few years now (after leaving MT for it and can't stand using anything else anymore.
There's even a TextMate bundle for the template code in EE.

I have found having both akismet and spam karma2 (http:// unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma) have made my life alot easier with comment spam.

Another plugin to look at for spam is Bad Behavior (http://www.bad- behavior.ioerror.us/)
Also as far as upgrading the blog goes, I too had serious issues with copying those files, sometimes giving up on my local modifications because I couldn't take the time to track all the changes I had made down. However all that changed when I started upgrading through subversion. Simply do a checkout of the most recent stable release (right now it's http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.1.2 ) and hack away. When a new version comes out, you can simply svn switch http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.1.3 for example, and you're done :)

Wow what a great idea.
I just checked out a clean dir, moved my plugins, themes and config file over, set permissions and all seems well!

That's what revision control is all about you know :)
I do the same with RadiantCMS, ruby 1.9 and a bunch of other utilities. My VCS of choice is Mercurial (http://selenic.com/mercurial) but that should not matter much :)

You can try Textpattern, it's the most elegant Publishing Tool on Earth. No updates required and most important stuff build in ( Spam protection, blacklisting, logging, etc ) plus, you can easily extend it to your hearts desire with a few clicks ( almost 400 different plugins are available) The TXP syntax is much easier to maintain and edit than these clumsy old school php files. You can make it whatever your heart desires, plus it's faster than WP.
And if you are so inclined, you can use the latest version of my bundle, to write all your txp source in TM.
Personally I prefer this one over patchwork-ware

If you are looking at multi-users then look at b2evolution:
It has functionality to handle multiple users very nicely.
When I wanted to switch from Bloxsom, I looked at lots of blog platforms and eventually chose WP. b2evo was in second place. The main reason I didn't get it is that it lacked a lot of plugins that WP has and multi-users weren't that important to me. That was a few years ago, so maybe they have more plugins now.

Hi Gerd,
maybe you can try Serendipity (http://www.s9y.org). It's a good blogging system, which i have used for a long time now. You can extend the Blog with Plugins. You can install all plugins from the admin-planel. Maybe you give it a try..
Kind regards,
Sebastian
