Well, in linux 'alt' is my meta key and esc is as well...but neither of those work in textmate.

in FreeBSD alt isn't a meta-key (in a TTY) and I can't remap it to meta because changing TTYs isn't possible anymore. I mapped control to caps and meta to control (you still need esc for…well esc ;) ) -- and then there's meta on the win-key but that's awkwardly placed above backspace
