Howdy,
I don't know if this happened before, but in the newest d/l (1070), I just realized that horizontal scrolling works (even though there is no horizontal scroll bar).
I was navigating a rather deep file directory in the drawer and just scrolling up and down for no particular purpose -- somehow it gives me peace of mind as I'm reading something in a tab -- I hit shift -- more peace of mind -- while using the scroll wheel and noticed from the corner of my eye that the project drawer started to scroll left and right!
So .. I was surprised ... hmm .. messing about with it some more, a narrow project drawer doesn't cut the middle out of the names in there, either.
Like I said, I don't know how long that's been happening, but that's sweet! I figured other folks might be interested in realizing that, too.
Thanks, Allan.

I am sorry to disappoint you, but I did not change the project drawer scrolling behavior.
Also, FYI the lack of scrolling is not by my good will, but Apple’s list views work so that they have a fixed virtual width (based on the columns), and if this is larger than the physical width, scrolling is possible. There is however no way to say that this virtual width should be “as wide as the widest entry”, meaning that I would e.g. have to say “always make it 500 pixels” and no matter what the list would contain, one would be able to scroll around in these 500 pixels.
So I opted for the “make it as wide as the physical space” and enable truncation of item titles, since this was aesthetically the nicest thing to do.

I see ...

Something funny happens here, then. It *seems* that if I have a deep enough directory structure open up in my drawer -- and have the drawer wide enough to see the full name of a file buried somewhere (maybe +7 folders deep) -- something might be getting 'stuck' and setting the width of the pane to be quite wide. I can then narrow the drawer to be very thin and no file names get truncated anymore, but the horizontal scrolling ability allows me to scroll left/right and look at the particular part (column) of the project drawer I please with out it mangling the names.
I was going to post some pictures, but I guess that'd be a little silly .. I guess it's just a fluke anyhow.

I believe when unfolding a group in an outline, the system does often add the indent of the new level to the width of the view. So that is likely what you are seeing.
