hi,
some people on the list talked about the icon and it seemed they didn't like it very much. i dont hate the old icon but it also doesnt impress me every time i see it, so over the weekend i had too much freetime and fired up inkscape to play around a bit. here is the result, i would like to hear some opinions how you like it or not. its inspired a bit by subethaedits icon and by the color-circle one posted here on the list and so i filled it purple to fit the gap. :)
hi Torsten,
I like it... different and playful. I'm using the little brackets one but maybe I'll switch. Good job though!

I've been using it for the last couple of days. I think it's currently the best complete icon made for TextMate :) Good job!
I still like the conceptual thing about the gear on the key (and also the braces), and especially the illustration which was done of this key -- but there's a way from this and to a full Aqua icon...
One thing that I have noticed on a few occasions with your icon is that I don't think it's fully balanced, i.e. the man looks a little like he's tilting toward the left. And also it's not recognizable in 16x16, but I think that's because you did not provide scaled version for lower sizes!?!

I must say that your icon is among the best I've seen so far. I even replaced my own creation with yours :)
I have spent the past few days looking at the icon in the dock, and there has been something slightly irritating about it. Here's how I think it could be improved further.
1. The 'head' is too big on the figure, and I think it lacks features, such as eyes and a smile. ( Is it just me that is reminded of a children's program from ages ago where the characters were big colourful blobs ? )
2. The icon looks a bit too flat and 2 dimensional compared to the others in the dock. It needs a little bit of 3D effects done to it to make it fit in better.
Perhaps you could provide us with a couple of source files, one of the background papers and one of the figure, so that we could have a play around with it ? Never used inkscape, and is not too keen on installing it either, so perhaps you could provide them as .png's or some other common format for Illustrator/Freehand/Photoshop.
Kind regards,
Mats
thanks for the comments and suggesttions. and sorry for not responding the last days, but i didnt had a internet connection. and the next days are also not much time for working on the icon again.
i will try to get a improved version (according to mats and allans notes) ready to the fist week in january or so, then i also will publish some svg and png sources because they need some cleanup.

One observation, FWIW: put this icon in the Dock and compare it with the icons for Mail, TextEdit, iCal. Do this with Justin's version of the gear key icon as well. Notice how the gear key icon appears to tilt in the same direction as Apple's icons? I think that's a nice detail to have.
Chris
I really like the icon as do the rest of you, but I do think it may be a little too similiar in style and concept to the SEE icon. Both icons have blobby faceless characters holding a pencil with a piece of paper in the background. Although the purple blobby character is cute and simple, I think some sort of mechanical object would better depict TM's automation abilities.

I might try to hammer out a more refined version of the key over the Christmas break.

Hi all,
So here is revision 59 of the icon, I tried to merge some of the suggestions from the list in the icon. The head is now a bit smaller, and the mate at all a bit bigger. There are now some gradients for a bit smoother look. Also the mate has been rotated a bit to the right. The 16px Icon misses the Pencil.
For the interested ones, there is a comparison between r27 and r58 at http://members.lycos.co.uk/staff/tm/comparison_in_dock.png and a animated gif showing the whole icon-development at http://members.lycos.co.uk/staff/tm/icon_progress.gif .
I am not sure if publishing svg-sources would be very useful, maybe I will think about it again, if there are requests.
Its not the final version, there are still some to-dos for me: - add some shadows to the papers - improve the gradients - try to improve the shadows
But I think this icon should look a bit better than the previous version.
If you have wishes/suggestions, please let me hear, maybe I will make them in the icon if its possible.
Please note that this icon (and any future versions) is published under the 'Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0' license. Hi,
Yesterday I just modified the 16px version of the icon a bit, it now contains just the mate with the pencil and without the background papers, maybe this is better than the previous approach.
