Hello,
I am not sure whether this is a TEX problem or a Textmate issue, but I decided to try it on this list first, because the problem appeared only after an update of Textmate. I am using a Powerbook G4 and Version 1.5.5 (1368) of Textmate. After the latest update, compiling of some latex documents has becoming extremely slow. A one sided document (KOMAscript letter with self made letterhead) which takes less than 2s in TeXShop requires more than 1 minute in Textmate! Interestingly the log file complains about metafont related issues which I am not at all comfortable with and which I haven't seen in earlier versions of Textmate (see compile log below). TexShop compiles the same document with some overfull box warnings but does not complain otherwise. Interestingly, other documents not containing the letterhead compile quite well..
Anybody seeing similar issues? Any advice where I should further look for? According to the revision notes there was no change in the latex bundle, or was there?
Best regards
Christof

Yes. Here is the .lco file which I load as an option to the scrrltr2 class (the included Logo files are postscript graphics). But once again, this has compiled well in the past and still compiles fine with Texshop.

Thanks for the hint. Running it in the terminal reveals that the different behavior between Texshop and Textmate is due to calling different latex engines. My copy of Textmate calls pdfTeX, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 (Web2C 7.5.6) and (my) Texshop pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.30.4-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5).
Thus the problem is not (directly) Textmate related. I just wonder why it happened after the last upgrade. I must have changed the Latex engine somehow!

So, how have you set up TeXShop to compile your programs? Do you use a particular engine to execute it? If not, what are the general engine settings in TeXShop?
Do you have multiple latex installations present? How did you install latex?
Please send me your files off-list when you get a chance.
Btw, only major changes to the bundles are recorded in the release notes. In fact there has been a number of changes to the bundle, but they were not deemed significant enough to include in the release notes.

So, the thing that worries me here is that textmate uses pdftex instead of pdfetex. Wondering why that is, because typically it runs pdfetex. Hopefully a tex file I can compile might give some hints.

Can you explain me the difference between pdftex and pdfetex. Because in my MacTeX 2007 installation pdfetex is just a symlink to pdftex.
No not really, because I don't really know it ;) This is all I found: http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=etex
I actually thought that tex as such is not used anymore, replaced by etex, and for instance in my admittedly old (circa 2005) tex install if I type pdftex on the command line then I get: This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.20a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.3)
So it is very surprising to me that Christof would be getting TextMate to use pdftex instead.

Haris,
I just realized that Texshop relies on the tetex distribution (installed with i-installer in /usr/local/teTex/bin/powerpc-apple- darwin7.9.0). pdflatex in that directory makes a call to pdftex. I have recently added gerben wierdas gwtex (also using the i-installer/ automatic configuration: /usr/local/gwTeX/bin/powerpc-apple- darwin7.9.0). The latter is called by textmate and executes pdfetex. In the past, I must have used the previous engine with Textmate too. Which is the current version of pdfetex then?
Does it make sense to send tex files if they cause trouble only with an outdated/depreciated engine?

Actually your problem is the other way around, it is textmate that is NOT executing pdfetex, at least doesn't seem to, which is what is puzzling me. So if you change the call that TeXShop makes and have it use gwTeX instead, do you then get the same log files?
Btw, do you have a /usr/texbin directory? If so, which distribution does it point to?

If by deprecated you mean pdftex versus pdfetex, then yes it does make sense because textmate switches to use different engines based on the existence of some packages in the preamble, and perhaps that's where the problem is. So if you can send us the preamble, that's the part that I care about.

Issuing the commands in a terminal, yes, I can always reproduce the error logs. The same occurs when I change the path in the Texshop preferences. pdflatex in the gwTeX tree always calls the pdftex engine rather than pdfetex and pdflatex in the tetex tree calls pdfetex.
Btw, do you have a /usr/texbin directory? If so, which distribution does it point to?
Yes, it points to /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX/Contents/ Programs/powerpc, which is a symlink to /usr/local/gwTeX/bin/powerpc- apple-darwin-current
Also, when you compile from the command line via pdflatex, which version of tex is used then?
The path is set to the gwTeX version, which calls pdftex rather than pdfetex.

Ok, it sounds like your problem is with gwtex then, you might want to take the discussion over to the "tex on macosx" mailing list.
If you want to be using the tetex you have installed instead, you'll want to use the switcher application that I think comes with the mactex install, so that it points back to your tetex install.
The difference basically is that TeXShop expects you to hardcode the paths to the executable (actually not anymore, i.e. downloading a new version of texshop should fix this, you might have to clear the preferences file though. Or you can change the paths yourself so that they point to /usr/texbin.
TextMate on the other hand uses whatever system the shell is set up to use. And so that would be whatever the switcher application sets it to be.
Here the preamble:
\documentclass[cjanssenlpmaa,backaddress=false]{scrlttr2}
\usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{epstopdf} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage{pdfsync} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage{lucidabr} \usepackage[frenchb]{babel} \setkomavar{subject}{blablabla} \date{09 mars 2007}
That looks innocuous enough.
