Hi,
I have a Russian colleague. He is really hooked of TextMate's possibilities. Unfortunately he is very poor in English. He asks me whether there are plans to localize TextMate.
AFAIK TM's code isn't written in that style. Meaning there's no 'Localizable.string' etc. And I know that it would cost much effort to rewrite the entire code in that way. But anyway it's only a question ;)
Thanks,
--Hans
Hmm... What your friend plan to write in TM without knowledge of root ;) developer language - English?
BTW I'm russian too

Ну, я не знаю. Я думаю что её нужен Текстдруг ;) ... oops I don't know. I believe he wants to use TM as end user. I showed him some stuff to do text analyses etc. He is able to write basic Java code but he asked - what does this mean: "Toggle Foldings at Level" etc. Maybe he only wants to have a nice basic tutorial in Russian ;) like Stanley Rost's http://projects.serenity.de/textmate/tutorials/.

Hehe,
unfortunately, my Russian has become a little rusty over time. “достопримечательности” is basically all that is left. ;)
Stan.

TextMate isn't hard part really… the bundles are. A localized version of just the default bundles would be a major undertaking, not to mention there isn't really a method in place to do it… Not to mention it might tend to make the bundles a lot harder to read with localization stuff added, dunno of any good solution…
aaa... good multilang tutorial is a good idea anyway (and IMO it should be placed at Macromates wiki). And you can try to translate bundle command name to russian. They should work and will have nice russian names ;)

Why not? Copy the entire English online manual to a wiki wiki.macromates.com/Manual/rus site, and then if someone has a bit time s/he translates paragraph by paragraph into Russian or, of course, into other languages.

PS @Alexey I know. It's really hard to translate proper names into Russian, but sometime also very funny ;) What do you think about Текстдруг ;)

I actually placed the markdown source at the repository to help potential translators: http://macromates.com/svn/Bundles/trunk/Manual/pages/
Takaaki Kato did the start of a Japanese translation.
As for the actual program, in 2.0 I am using string tables where appropriate, but as Michael mentioned, the real challenge is the bundles, and we have no system in place for this. I guess the most obvious approach here would be to use catalogs, but not sure how broadly this is supported, e.g. can you get a catalog string in a shell script?

Yes, you can by using `gettext MSGID` (at least as far as I know).

Nice. Think i should try to do something for TM friends ;)
Oh... and any advice how to do it? I need to checkout EN version and than submit RU? Is write access available for everyone?

The process would be to checkout the EN version and start converting it; once you have a portion done (say a file) send it to bundles@textmate.org requesting commit access to a RU directory.

allan, do you have any statistics about how relevant a country is? for example how many germans visit your site and/or have bought a license? if it's relevant, a friend of mine or i could do some translations..
hello
I did a start of a french translation but perhaps it's preferable to wait TM 2.0 ?
Regards Alain

Based on http://update.omnigroup.com/%C2%B9 72% of users run their system in English, and the next 17% are using French, German, and Japanese (so ~90% of users are spread out over only 4 different languages).
Most French and German computer users (who use TextMate for programming) likely have no problem using an English interface. I do see a noticeable amount of sales from JP (despite TextMate’s poor support for CJK), so that would likely be the most relevant translation -- but with German and French translations being relevant on “number of users of the language”.
¹ I expect my users to be slightly more technical², and at least here in Scandinavia, technical users tend to favor an English interface.
² For example OmniGroup show 21% of their users are on Leopard. My numbers show 50% of users has upgraded.
