I tend to work on projects by opening a textmate disk browser from commandline, using mate <dirname>
Then when I open the first file, it doesn't have an editor tab anymore, whereas previously it used to
When I open a 2nd file, at this point the tabset appears
Is this a bug, or an intentional change? I much prefer the old way, and to be honest I preferred the fixed width tabs too

Wow, that isn't what I see at all. I always have at least a single tab, even if it is untitled, and all tabs are the same width. Maybe you're on Yosemite? If so, this could a Yosemite thing. m.

Thanks, I see the issue now. I thought this was new to 2.01 beta 1, but I now see the Tabset was redeveloped in 26th Sept release
It seems I had "Document Tabs: Show for single document' unticked (or it defaults to false) Weird I've only just noticed, I always update TM as soon as a new ver is available

I changed the default (which would affect users who never changed it).

Beta 1 was the first non-nightly build with the changes.
As for the width of the tabs: they still try to have equal width when space allows it, but the default width has been increased, so it will not look the same. I increased the default width because I think it looks better when centering the titles (especially when the close button shows, as too narrow a tab with centered title and a close button looks like an alignment error).
