sorry what I meant was I had added some bundles myself the previous week (although not a PHP bundle) so I deleted those bundles.
In the event, I fixed things yesterday by reinstalling the application in full after deleting it and any associated files I could find and this worked.
Any info on what the error meant?

No idea what the error was about or which command you had installed to cause it, but definitely the problem was the installation of some third party command (or creation of your own).
That error with the "please cache your project" is with the magento php bundle. I need to patch that with my local code. I haven't updated github in a while but I have been fixing bugs locally for that bundle.
