Hello,
is there a way that textmate can detect the used language (german or english). Normally I write in german and now when I type english everything is underlined. With a right click tm tries to correct in to a german word.
Thanks in advance -- Christian

Did you try ⌘: to set the language to English?

There I have "Automatic by language" as standard. The OS-Prefs also set to "Automatic by language".
When I highlight the entire document (Plain Text) and hit cmd + : and set it to English nothing happens.

You do not need to select the entire doc. Simply set the language to English and change the doc by typing eg " " to trigger the spell checker.

Thanks Hans-Jörg, that worked out fine.
But why is it not working when set to "Automatic by language"?

Hi all,
I experience the same behaviour. By default, TM thinks I am editing some text in french. The "Automatic by language" doesn't seem to work properly in TM, whereas I works fine in Mail, for example. It is especially strange because I never write in french in TM...
Best regards, Mathieu

The same here for me with german. Actually I disabled the "Automatic by language" feature resently because it annoyed me so much. I never realized, that the feature actually works quite well outside of TM.

Well personally, spell checking doesn't work at all with me in TextMate since SL, whether I put Automatic by Language (following Hans-Jörg advice) or English. I get absolutely everything underlined in red, which is really an annoyance, and I'm surprised no-one mentioned this problem on the list.
Would that be related? Any idea of what's wrong?
Thanks, enas

OK I somehow managed to apply the workaround. I had to set the global preference (from the preference pane) to English, and then restart TextMate. Now I finally got rid of the red underline!
Thanks again, enas

Hmm, I could be wrong, but I actually thought that this is meant by "Automatic by Language", ie an App spell checks a doc due to the set OS env language. Because I do not think that the Mac OX parses each word/line/sentence in order to guess what language is currently used.
The only thing which I couldn't find in SL is the option "Multi-Language" which I often used.

10.6 does but iirc then TM doesn't use a standard Cocoa-text view but an own one and therefore that feature might not work

You do not need that anymore because SL tries to detect the language per paragraph

Ha. You're right. Just tried it out in TextEdit. SL switches the language automatically due to what I'm writing. But then TM doesn't do that automatically. This should be implemented as Plug-in I think ;)
