Hi,
New tiger install here. How do I get text files to open in TM rather than Textedit?
1) From Finder, navigate to a file with extension .txt and select it. 2) Press Command-I in Finder to bring up the information panel for that file. 3) One of the sections there says: Open with: and probably has textedit selected there. Click and change the selection to textmate. 4) Right below is a button called "Change All...". Click on that, and choose "Continue". 5) You're all set!

Thanks Charilaos. That worked like a charm.
Any idea why I have two instances of "Textmate.app" in the "Open with:" pull-down. Same is true of "Tofu.app"

Do you by any chance have two copies of Textmate.app in your computer, maybe left over from some other install? Use the Finder search to search for textmate.app. That's the only thing I can think of. If you don't have two copies, then maybe a reboot will fix that. I had the same problem at some time.

Looks like it's spotlight indexing my backup external. I can't get the privacy option in spotlight prefs to persist. Such a pesky thing.
Charilaos, how do I go about having textmate launch text files that have no extension? The aforementioned procedure didn't work in this case. They still open in TextEdit.

Not sure, but why would you want to do that? If they are text files, they should have extension .txt. There are lots of files that have no extension and that are not text files, like all unix executables. I don't think it's a good idea to associate textmate with all files with no extension, even if it is possible, and I don't know if it is. The above method indeed does not work in this case, possibly because the file type is considered to be "????", i.e. there really is no type for files with no extension. If you really think you should be allowed to do this, file an enhancement request for Finder, but again, it's not a good idea IMHO.

Perhabs those files use creator codes and file types to identify themselves; In that case, you will have to fix them on a per-file basis: Open the file in TextMate, make sure the 'Creator code: blank' is set, and applies to all files, finally, save the file.
