Hello Allan,
I found this on the net today: http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/04/24/how-to-blurminal-your-os-x-terminal/
Its a hack of the terminal via SIMBL giving transparent backgrounds of Terminal a 'blur effect'. For a certain degree 'blurring backgrounds' improve usability, instead of being GUI-toy only. Also, it would integrate well into GUI changes of OSX that came with Leopard.
Could something similar be on the roadmap?
BTW: This 'blurring' effect could be accompanied (fo' tha freakanoidz) by effects like 'invertation of the background', making it B/W or applying textures to it. And Im thinking these kinds of effects will be supported by Core technology, having in mind that you stated TM2.0 will be absolutly build on core libraries of OSX 10.5 Leopard :0)
Thanks in advance! Dennis
ps: But I also have in mind that you dont think TM will have its own background-images, so I consider that you dont put any priority on these GUI things :0(
If you want usability, use opaque backgrounds, no offence.

is just mine. you should wait for the developers and others to see what they have to say. i just can't see how a busy background can increase usability.

Eye candy is to a desktop what beauty is to a relationship.
To me, the more immersive and 3D looking are the objects I manipulate on screen, the easier is for me to forget that I'm handling abstract metaphors. In a sense, I can use lower levels of my brain to move stuff around, so that the higher levels are free to think

I regularly need a transparent background in my terminal or text-editor for seeing what is behind and getting information from it- you just have to have the settings right for getting not disturbed by it. And eye-candy is always nice but I like it more flat than 3D ;)

This hits the nail on the head. I like my terminals transparent, because I often have multiple terminals open sometimes with one running in the background. If you can see through the top layer, you get visual feedback when a process completes. But it's inconvenient to have a semi-transparent background, because then you have text on text action which is very confusing. If the top layer is transparent but blurs the background you get the visual feedback with out the confusing jumble of letters.
Incidentally, it's kind of funny that you found blurminal via this tutorial. In fact, Ciarán Walsh (who is rather active round here) wrote this plugin after my request in ##textmate. Here is his original post on the matter: http://ciaranwal.sh/2007/11/16/blurminal

As Textmate is a Cocoa-App, why don't you use afloat 2[1] for that task? Fear of SIMBL?
I use it regularily, but it has some issues with spaces. (floating windows dont show in the spaces view)

nope, not afraid of SIMBL here. The hack I wrote about in my original post comes via SIMBL, do you remember?

doesnt sound quite healthy, but I have to try out, so thanks for the link. (I use spaces a lot to switch via shortcut between fullscreens enabled with megazoomer for coding/imaging/test-browsing/communication tasks).

I certainly hope that neither developer time, nor interface complexity, are expended on such a pointless “feature”.

Hey, it's about personal preference, not religion :0)
If you upgraded to Leopard, you will certainly have noticed that menues this time are transparent and blur their backgrounds.
Some people (not only a minority) likes eyecandy. That could be 'point' enough. And I dont want to pretend usability arguments on this, as they are more 'valuable' in other terms and concerns.
But truely a blur effect could improve transparent backgrounds, which are offered in Textmate already.
mmmhhh ... at this point, I guess the discussion has come to its end ... otherwise its getting just ~~~pointless :-/

I certainly hope that both my development time and interface enjoyment are expanded when such a lovely feature is added. ;)
Hopefully added as a plugin though.

yepp, optional features - plugged in or nativley integrated - are so great for everybody.

Hi!
I love the Blur effect in Terminal, but I can't get this plugin to work. I've installed it by double-clicking and restarting TextMate, then setting a transparent background, but it doesn't seem to be working. I also tried using a "defaults write..." command, but no luck there either.
Thanks in advance,
itp

Hi Ian,
I had background transparency already active when I installed the plugin. Could this make a difference?
After restarting TM the blurring was immediately there.
BTW: Thanks a lot, Ciarán, for the plugin!

Hello Ciarán,
your plugin for blurring TM's background rocks and is useful indeed.
I can now have - if I have to - several windows of TM with semi-opaque BGs opened without being disturbed when they overlap. this is also preventing any hastle with minimizing and re-opening windows from the dock wich could certainly become a pain in the a$$.
cool!

It started working mysteriously. I think I had to set a transparency and restart after that.
As for the "defaults write..." command I tried, it was
defaults write com.macromates.Textmate 'Blurmate Radius' -float 1.0
since that is close to what worked for the Blurminal plugin. I have no idea if that had any effect or not.
Thanks! itp
