If you're using subversion as your version control system, it's got some really tight integration with that.

Yes, Sune even did install Mantis on the server -- but for me it's currently just a lot of extra complexity, and I think also that most bug tracking systems are a turn-off for the user.
There currently is the wiki for more persistent tracking and then this mailing list. With regard to following the progress, december has been a little unusual in that it hasn't seen any betas after 1.0.2, but normally it takes less than a week for something to be implemented to show up in a beta, so an easy way to track the progress is just to enable beta version checks in the preferences :)
