Can I save a markdown file as .txt and not loose any of the functionality of a .md file?
You can set the language of a .txt file to be Markdown, and then all txt files will be treated as Markdown, until you set it otherwise. To change the language of the current file, use the little L in a circle located at the bottom of the document window.
