I had a quick look, and yes, it's the grammar. Around line 367 this pattern, that I
don't claim to understand the purpose of, gobbles up ()

before the pattern matching tuples around line 392 get a chance to process it

I deleted the first entry and got expansion of () working without any obvious destructive
