If you're still using Terminal, you will find iTerm is an excellent replacement. It has tabs for multiple terminals, shortcuts for SSHelling to other hosts, etc.

I try iTerm every time a new release comes out, but it still has some major memory leaks that cause it to sloooooow doooooowwwwwwwnnnnnn after a couple of days. I went back to Terminal.app. Too bad, really; it's got promise.

it also doesn't seem to save settings under tiger. You can change them using the prefs editor in the xcode tools though.
Not sure if its still maintained, last time I looked the mailing list seemed pretty quiet.

Hmm it works for me, although its system is rather bizzare and hard to figure out as for where to change what. But for me it has a few MUST features over Terminal: It sends all keys, including especially PgUp/PgDn and it has tabs :-).
As for leaks, I never leave mine up too long.

I too have issues with iTerm. I used to use it all the time, but ended up switching back to Terminal.app after lots of frustration with iTerm. Tabs would be nice, but i rather find Terminal.app sufficient for now.

Biggest problem for me with iterm is its bad UTF-8 support. Use of mutt in UTF-8 locale in iterm is cumbersome whereas it works well in Terminal.

Same for me. Until now I haven't managed to type Umlaute in iterm while it worked in Terminal.app after just a few tries ;)

iTerm utf-8 works fine for me.. NOW... but took some time with its ridiculous settings system. Although when it encounters invalid UTF-8 strings, iTerm will fill the line with ############ where Terminal is a bit more sensible :-p. Double-width chars work like crap in iTerm; dunno in Terminal.

Terminal sends PgUp/PgDn if you also press Shift.

According to Oscar Bonilla:
Terminal sends PgUp/PgDn if you also press Shift.
As I found that a non-intuitive way of working, I finally got to look at the configuration of Terminal.app and found that you can change the bindings to now it does the proper thing with using PgDn and PgUp.

I also can't figure out how to save prefs with iTerm. The font/theme doesn't work for me at all so I try to change in prefs and it simply doesn't do anything. I've gone through this a few times with iTerm thinking I must just be missing something really stupid. But each time, I end up frustrated and switch back to Terminal.

In my experience, either A) the most recent build of iTerm, or B) iTerm on Tiger (or possibly C) the combination of both) does in fact seem to break preference saving. I've had to resort to using the Property List Editor to edit my prefs file in order to really get anything good saved (like changing the ANSI color scheme).
I actually nabbed the XCode project from the iTerm site and mucked around--actually trying to fix the irritating "always bounces the Dock when a background tab has new input" issue--but haven't been able to fix the prefs issue yet.
Ironically, the only real thing that I use iTerm for is the tabs, but it's so useful that I tend to overlook the bugginess.

I've also tried rebuilding iTerm but with no luck. I'd hoped to have a go at fixing the prefs problem but I've only just got a mac and don't know the api's.
The problem is with NSCFDictionary, using the setObject: foo forKey: baa function, it fails with 'mutating method sent to immutable object'
Whats unusual is my self-built copy of iTerm did save prefs very occasionally, normally failed though.

Is it just me or is the anti-aliasing just butt-ugly in iTerm? I spend a *lot* of time in my terminal. I'd love to have tabs but I just can't look at that text without painfully scratching at my eyeballs involuntarily. Is there a setting to fix that? (Sorry Allan for this totally OT thread).

Like others I have had troubles with iTerm. WRT tabs, I find running GNU screen (http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/screen.html) in Terminal.app more useful. Best, Mark

I hope this isn't too OT, but does anyone know a way to get the same effect in iTerm that Allan talks about here : http://macromates.com/blog/archives/2006/01/07/word-movement-in-terminal/#mo... ?
I never found iTerm to be as slow as a lot of people say and it really helps me out in a lot of ways. The prefs thing is easily solved with Tools > Save Display Profile or Tools > Save Terminal Profile. (I forget which one).
Now ... if only I can figure out how to send \033b via option+left arrow :)
