I often have to code / edit files in Linux. So, I'm looking for an editor with the following TextMate features:
1) The ability to *easily* use a dark background. For a definition of easy, read: not Jedit (at least, it was hard 2-3 years ago when I last did it . . I had to change every syntax type), and not emacs (same reason) 2) Has the same keys that TextMate uses -- mostly. 3) Syntax Highlighting 4) Fast
Any takers? Or, am I resolved to be typing <esc>:wq into every document I ever edit with TextMate :)

hm... vim? That might be trickier...
- Syntax Highlighting
vim

It's not _that_ bad after all ;-) Surely I would also prefer having TextMate-alike under other unixalikes but once you create your environment for vim - it works very well and works practically the same everywhere. To ease the pain and smoothen the transition you may install "vimate" under OS X ;-)

Under linux I've used a programme called Kate for many years and have been very happy with it. I've even made some of my own custom TM bundles so that TM behaves like Kate in some circumstances!
Kate is part of the KDE suite. I've not used Gnome in about 8 years so I can't offer any recommendations there.
For command line only, I use nano. It does syntax highlighting too.
Hamster.
is this helpful?

Well, on that front, I have to say that the recent builds of MacVim are extremely impressive. If you *do* find yourself using Vim a lot on Linux, I recommend you have a look at MacVim for OS X - it is finally beginning to feel quite "Mac-like" and not so much of an intruder.

Not, of course, that I recommend it over TM, and I hasten to add that I only mention it because of your comment - switching constantly between any two editors is a pain. No editor-war intended!
Kate on modern Linux and TM on Mac OS X. No windows for me :)
