Printf will check the string for placeholders (like %s, %d), and escape sequences (like \n, \033).
So you probably want:
echo "?$TM_SELECTED_TEXT" | R --slave
Or to use a here-string:
R <<<"?$TM_SELECTED_TEXT" --slave
These two though provide the input with a newline. For echo it can be avoided using -n as argument switch.
