If at least two carets are on different lines, use arrow up/down to switch back to a single caret.
If all the carets are on the same line, up/down will preserve them. In this case, use command with arrow left/right (move to begin/end of line), alternative key equivalents for these actions are ⌃A / ⌃E. This will move all the carets to the same location and thus merge them into a single caret.
If you are a mouse user, you can also click somewhere.
