Ligatures are an interesting solve. I assume this appears when you have two spaces that aren't leading spaces, too, but maybe that'd help you catch issues too...

Those are some good solutions, but unfortunately I mainly have issue with how small two spaces look compared to four. Seeing whitespace characters and the indent guide will certainly help. But using a different font does give me an interesting idea to find a font with two-space ligatures that appear as four spaces.
