As Brad mentioned, lshort is really useful. I read that and produced my first LaTeX document in an afternoon.
I'd also check out Essential LaTeX++ at e.g. <http://noodle.med.yale.edu/latex/essential.pdf
, which isn't as in-depth as lshort.
