It shouldn’t be necessary to modify PATH to have MacTeX work, even with the new placement of kpsewhich in /Library/TeX/texbin, though it assumes that you haven’t disabled updates for the LaTeX bundle (by e.g. putting your own version into ~/Library/Application Support/Avian/Bundles).

but it did not work. I’ll download the latest MacTex to see if it works. It used to work before I install the latest OS X El Capitan.

I think it’s not uncommon for MacTeX to break after OS updates.
