Hi,
Is it normal behaviour that the Web Preview window closes when you switch to another file in the project? Or is this a known bug?
The preview window can hardly be useful if this behaviour is the expected behaviour?
I am working on some Sphinx doc files and whenever I switch to a .rst file to run my build pipeline the preview of the HTML file I am interested in closes. It would be really awesome if it could stay open somehow so that I would be able to take advantage of the auto-refresh behaviour. Is there a setting I can switch on or maybe some other workaround?
Thanks for reading!
André
PS: when searching I found numerous posts mentioning two web previews - I can only assume that one is meant to be the Show as HTML output Command option and the other the Show Web Preview Window menu action. Just to be clear I am talking about the latter.

I only started using it recently, so I can't say, but I think it's a bug. I've seen it do the same thing when I'm not switching files, as if it's just crashing. My guess is that switching files is just a more reliable way to get it to crash than modifying the document, so that's when you see it most.
Someone will have a better answer than that. :)
While we're on the subject, doesn't the Web Preview use the system's WebKit? I've noticed some differences in the way it renders some things vs. Safari.

It is normal behavior, although it might be undesired.

:) They share the same process, so if the Web Preview crash, it’ll take TextMate down with it.

It is WebKit, but it might have slightly different font defaults.

Honestly, I wondered how it was possible for that very reason. So maybe it's not “crashing”, but I've seen the window go away while updating content. If I can reproduce consistently, I'll give more detail.

It does, but that has a fairly obvious explanation (to me anyway). Specifically, I was testing some fancy transforms and transitions. I had a video playing that you could flip over like a card to see some text in a div on its back. The video flickers a lot and shows the back when it shouldn't in the web preview. In Safari, it works like you'd want. If it's the system WebKit, I'm sure there's little (if anything) you can do about it, and it's not like this is a typical use case. Just making sure.
I see. Well I found a "workaround" if you can call it that - it is intended behavior after all.
Just right-click in your project drawer on the file you are interested in previewing and choose "Open <file> in New Window". From the newly opened editor window you can launch a web preview via the Window menu. Then when you switch back to you project window you are free to jump around and the preview window stays open. Never mind the newly opened editor window - i just make it so small its not even there :)
