TextMate does not do the conversion of MarkDown "marked up" text: WordPress does that. You will need to install the MarkDown plug-in, which can be found on the WordPress site. I'm not sure if Smarty Pants is rolled into it or not, but if you like the look of print typography, then you might consider that plug-in as well. (SmartyPants does things like "smart quotes" and em dashes.)
