By “elegant” I meant a solution that would still have the menu 
placed under the caret when that makes the most sense, but otherwise 
(maybe) centered.

Bigger can be done, try this:

     defaults write com.macromates.TextMate.preview 
OakBundleManagerDisambiguateMenuFontSize -int 30
