You've probably thought of these ideas before, but maybe you haven't
¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Have you tried enabling "View" -> "Show invisible characters"?
What about using a different font? I like [Source Code
Pro[1]](https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-code-pro) but [there are a
lot of
choices[2]](http://hivelogic.com/articles/top-10-programming-fonts/).
How about "Show indent guides"?
There's also [this ancient post that enables a "indent
guide"[3]](https://stackoverflow.com/a/17492004/1167956) in a completely
different way. Speaking of this, @team friendly bump to make the "Show
indent guides" smarter...
