Two more things I use:

ctrl + L centers the caret on the page.
I look at the "Line: Column:" at the bottom left of the window.

Still, I think I'd use a block carret if I could.

More than the caret, what I sometimes can't find is a selection, e.g.
when searching.
Especially when there is a lot of colors, different backgrounds, etc.
A visual feedback for carret and selection positions in the gutter
could be nice...
