I often have difficulty also locating the caret. (I am assuming you  
were talking about the caret, not the mouse cursor).
I have found two ways to make my life easier:
One is to always highlight the current line. (In the Fonts & Colors  
preference item, it's the Line Highlight item. Just set it to  
something that would slightly stand out, enough to notice but not too  
much so as to distract).
The other is, whenever I am looking for the caret, to press something  
like shift-cmd-right arrow, or left arrow, so as to get it to select  
an entire line, hence having more stuff stand out. Then pressing the  
arrow in the other direction returns me to the state I was at before.
