Currently betas are for bundle developers or people who don't mind 
doing their own svn checkout, and don't mind that not all syntaxes use 
the proper scope names (for themes).

That's why they do not show up in the software update checks.

When the majority of bundles have been updated, conditions should be 
back to normal, meaning betas include (at least some) bundles, and new 
betas are reported via the software update feature.
