Ah, so, what do we need to use instead? Is there a file somewhere

Yes, that did it. It might be something worth mentioning somewhere,
it's not something all users would know how to do. Then again, if
no-one complains...

You're right, I tried it again now. What I had done was just press
command-tab to switch to safari. That was enough to lose the caret. But
if one does not mess with safari at all, it works fine.
