I had the exact same problem. The setting is actually in the Adobe
Reader preferences. Open the preferences and go to the Internet
category. There uncheck the "Display in PDF browser using: " box, and
possibly also the "Check browser settings when starting Reader" box
(If you don't it will try to take over again when it gets a chance).
Restart your browser possibly, and that should do the trick.
If you later restart the reader and go to the preferences again, it
would seem that the box is checked again, but your browser should
nonetheless work just fine, assuming the second box is unchecked.
I have to admit, I find it quite irritating, and weird, that this
setting would be in adobe reader.
Then again, I find it weird that to set the Default Browser, you have
to actually open the Safari preferences. I would expect a system
preferences pane devoted to such issues.
