I downloaded 2015 MacTex.  It works now.  Thanks for the help.  Tao

 Useful reminder, thanks. It made me realize I had an earlier Aug '15
 version of the LaTeX bundle in /Avian/Bundles and didn't need
 to fiddle with PATH.
