Presently TextMate will wait for most threads to finish before it 
(fully) terminates, and it sounds like you have a thread still running 
doing syntax highlight.

This can be verified by looking at the spin report, see 
http://kb.textmate.org/writing_bug_reports#crashes-or-hangs

This behavior may change as part of some unscheduled refactoring, but 
for now this is just how things work.
