Looks like I've found a solution, you just need to create a symlink..

sudo ln -s /usr/local/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.18.dylib /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.18.dylib

Dunno why it was working without symlink in irb.. probably PATH...
