Links can reference non-existing files/folders/volumes (aliases can “mount on request” and more), be to an ancestor of current path (i.e. recursive), etc. — this makes it problematic to allow inline expansion especially with proper file system notification wrt. updates.

This is similar to how Finder treats links and presently not something that can be changed.
