The hack I wrote about in my original post comes via SIMBL, do you remember?

doesnt sound quite healthy, but I have to try out, so thanks for the link.
(I use spaces a lot to switch via shortcut between fullscreens enabled
with megazoomer for coding/imaging/test-browsing/communication tasks).
