Something looks wrong here for sure. If I open the disk image I see  
just this:

   http://www.hashref.com/tmp/subtleGradientDMGContents.png

whereas an ls -la of the volume gives these many symlinks:

   http://www.hashref.com/tmp/subtleGradientDMGContentsSeenWithLs.png

Does that ring any bell?
